1992 model hilux mods and home made mods

hi im new to the 4x4 seen and i am on a tight budget. im wondering whats the biggest tyres on a set of 15s on my hilux i could go, my lux looks like it may have a 2 inch lift in the springs. its a dual cab
what other mods could i look at doing on it, cheap
like extended shackles second hand or building them
what else could i do to make it funner. thanks i know there post here somewhere i just cant locate.

Depends on what sort of 15 inch rims you have? 15x7's? 15x8's?

Most people will tell you that you cant run wider than an 11.5 inch wide tyre on a 7 inch rim and 12.5 inch wide on an 8 inch rim

You should be able to run 31x10.5's without any dramas whatsoever.. 32x11.5's at a push without any extra lift.. You may scrub on full flex but that also depends on what offset rims you have at the moment?

As posted above, 31x10.5x15 tyres will fit nicely on 15x7 rims.
If you have a 2inch lift, then you should be able to run 33x12.5x15 tyres, but you are best getting some 15x8 rims. There may be some slight scrubbing on the rear of the front guard when flexed up. And you will need to make up some sort of flares for the guards, as the tyres will stick out from the guards, which is a legal no no. Most people just use rubber garden edging from Bunnings and fit that. I used an old real estate sign to make mine.
A cheap way to get some extra clearance is to fit a body lift/cab lift, whatever you want to call it. The kit is fairly cheap, just make sure you get Hi-tensile bolts. Its also an easy mod to do with a mate in a couple of hours.
Whichever way you decide to go, do a search through the tech sections for lots of advice, and if you cant find what youre looking for, then post up and ask questions. We will usuanlly help out anyone that has questions. Even my dumb questions got answers.

Do a 2" bodylift, some 33" tyres and a couple of auto lockers. Wheel the piss out of it.

And then read some more.

Don't use extended shackles without using longer springs or moving spring mounts. It's useless wank factor.

hi there well this is what im thinking
32 inch maxxis on my sunnies that are only 7 wide
and then im going to work out how to get the front to flex as it is total crap atm, thinking of taking out 1 ton leaf. might get new shocks

as forr the front diff well as im on a very tight budget im going to weld it to get it to lock when in 4wd.

Do NOT weld the front diff. The birfields won't last, and you'll have horrible steering. If you're going to weld a diff, do the rear.

i got told that i should weld the front as it will only engage when hubs are locked in. is this true or do i take the lsd out of back and put in front and then weld front and put in back

285/75R16's (33x11.5x16's) on my 2+2" Lifted hilux ate the rears of the front guards when even slightly flexed up. Really needed to move the axle forwards. Had to remove the mud flaps before the tyres did it for me! :shock:

U can weld the front but you'll be more likely to brake stuff, you'll also loose your tight turning circle and some steering while in 4wd..wouldn't recommend it. Stick with your LSD rear or fit a lockrite instead.

As for tyres... Stick with 32's and u should be ok. Only way I could fit 33's under my 4runner was with 4 inches lift a d even then I scrub at full flex.

You dont need lockers or welded diffs yet, seeing as though you are new to this.
You should do mild mods first,eg- increase ground clearance(A), run some decent rubber to gain traction when off road(B).
A- do a bodylift, 2inches should be fine, and its a cheap and very easy way of gaining clearance.
get your springs identified, if they are stock height or lifted and by how much, if they are stock, then get 2inch lifted.

B- run a set of 31x10.5 tyres on your 15x7 sunnys, they will be more than enough for you to play on while your offroad experience and confidence grows.
when you cna afford to, up your tyre size to 33x12.5, but run them on 15x8 rims.

Dump ALL fluids from the vehicle, and replace with new clean fluids, including front and rear diffs, gearbox and transfer case. Replace ALL filters and do a good service throughout. If you are planning on driving in mud, and yes, we all do it, make yourself some diff breathers, and some for the gearbox and transfer case.
Check all bearings are in good shape, check driveshafts for any play.
Basically go right over/under the whole car and check/double check everything before you head out.
Then buy some good recovery gear, eg; snatch straps, rated shackles, make sure your car has at least one rated recovery point front and rear.

Head out bush with at least one other 4x4 and explore and have a play, see what you can do. Your vehicle will be alot more capable than you. The more you drive, the more you will learn how to handle/control in different situations, ie, rocks, mud, holes, side angles, descents, climbs.

ok thanks for all the help.
what ive done to date
1 got 32 inch maxxis
2 put 200mm long shackles in///// and found my frign brake lines are to short
3 new shock as the ones in there no longer fit and they actualy came from a two wheel dr so they should not of been in there in the first place.

so now what should i change to suite the current mods i wish i could post pics on here somehow

Drop in some decent longer shocks n get some longer brake lines. That should tie you up for a while.

I'm on the other side of the fence, if you plan on doing it for fun not just a 6 month phase your going through, lockers would be my first mod. all the flex and sick hectik marsden spec rubber wont help you when its biting into thin air.

The std front end will work better than you think with a set of 4inch lift shocks swapped for whatever is in there now and yes they will just bolt in, if you like to do things proper extend your bump stops, but id be looking at a set of ext brake lines while i was at it.

Lockers, air locked if you can afford it. Auto's are good bang for buck, but don't compare to air lockers IMO.
Shocks


Suspension / Steering, RUF & X-over/Hi-steer, shock hoops, ext front shaft ( can be done for around the 500 dollar mark if you hunt out the bargains and research where things are cheaper *cough* the US.
Rear is a tough one without playing around, falcon springs are good but ride liek a feckin water bed, ifs are not all they are cracked up to be, id play with the stock packs personally. then its legal atleast and will work almost as good.
IMO in hilux land, the lower the better, anyone who says you need all this lift to fit 35's/37s is a knobjockey, i have next to 0 lift all 4 spring packs are flat or inverted at ride height and 37s will not scrub on anything.

Tyres offroad only and/or defect on road haha. ( i'd grab a set of 2nd hand 32/33's with the lockers).

Underbody clearance.

Last but not least, Nos stickers, and, lift it fat chicks cant jump stickers.

hi there i know im new to the seen but after measuring what tyres i could fit it was made aware that 33's would scrub hence the reason for 32's as i wasnt paying a shit load of money to stuff my tryes and my tuff lux.
maybe if you cut the guards and fit a 253 v8 in as i think your hilux would struggle to pull with any thing bigger but thanks for your advise.
is what im saying true people thanks

Most standard engines will cope with anything up to 33 inch tyres in my opinion. They maybe slower on climbing hills on road but you shouldnt notice a huge difference off road until you get to the really steep stuff.. Most poeple change to 4.88 or 4.5 something diffs when they upgrade to 33 inch or bigger tyres to reduce the difference back to standard gearing again. No need to drop a 253 v8 into it when a diff change is much easier.

32's will be plenty for now. Unless your looking at serious offroading, then you'd do body lift, spring lift and fit 35's or thereabouts..

Made my Shackles $30.00
Shocks $100.00 for 4 cheap
tidy it up few hours elbow grease
put icom uhf in
so its not bad for what it owes me
