GQ TD42 - Starting Problems

Post by Diggers »

Hey Guys,

I'm having problems starting my GQ. It's been a little temperamental, on warm days it will start without problems (assuming battery is charged) on cold days it will be a real PITA! Once it has started it runs perfectly, any suggestions? My immediate assumption is the glow plugs or injectors are in need of a refresh, hoping it is not down on compression or something more serious.

Cheers,

next cold start get someone to hold a thick piece of wire from the battery to the glow plug rail for a few seconds then hit the key. if it starts good it will be glow plugs or glow plug relay. doesnt sound bad if it is starting good when warm. good luck.
only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..

Thanks mate, I pulsed the glow plug rail for 5 seconds and repeated 3 times, the old girl started no worries! Will check out the relay and wiring... Thanks again!

Does it miss when you start it? Mine does after it sits for a week or more. I'll get the pump & injectors done sometime.

Check the voltage at the glow rail to make sure its getting the right voltage. Also check the condition and resistance of the glow plugs. I got new glow plugs for $10 each a while back which is really cheap.

to test the glow plugs just get a $5 test light and put on end to a good earth and get someone to turn the key it should light up for a few seconds and then turn off and should be on while cranking the other thing it may be is one or some of your injectors maybe leaking causing it to be hard to start hope this helps good luck
