Dual purpose AC & air compressor?

I have heard about people converting their AC compressors to be air only by using oil seperators. Would it be possible to rig up some sort of system with switches, valves, oil seperators whatever, to run AC normally but when switched(automatic/pressure or manual), can bypass the AC and run air only to resevoir tank.
I admit to know FA about AC but it all sounds good to me.

It would be possible and could work well for a while. A/C systems are notorious for going loosing gas and doing something like this to would make it hard no to loose the gas.
An ARB of something a bit better is a much better option if you havent got room for a second off engine drive compressor.

Don't confuse the issue..Air conditioning runs on gas and oil..in a closed loop...any opening of the loop reduces volume/pressure in the system and can introduce contaminants. It would (unless controlled by god knows what) be rendered useless at the first opening due to loss of gas
Air con is air con
Air compressor is an air sompressor...
They are not dual functional

I'm with punchy on this one, well, except for the bit about an air compressor being an air sompressor...
Fit a 2nd compressor if u can, or an electric jobbie as Sam suggested.

Yep, Im with Punchy and Damo. The two are not interchangeable. I run one of these systems for an air compressor. Forget the electric compressor, unless absolutely unavoidable.

Yep... Can't be done!!!!
And R-134a is CRAP. runs too high head presures compared to R-12. This is the main reason for refrigerant loss and compressor failure in late model A\Cs

i still get r-12 refills, bit more expensive, but works better than the new shit aswell.
