Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I have a 60 landcruiser 5 speed with a heavy duty clutch its fitted to a 350 chev in a hilux. I am using a 80 series brake booster and master clinder but the travel on the hilux pedal is short in comparision to the landcruiser so i have had to have the 60 slave cylinder sleeved as small as it can be so the fluid pushed from the master cylinder enough to move the slave cylinder enough to make the clutch release fully.

Hope that makes sence the trade off is a VERY VERY heavy clutch pedal.

My question is can i fit a remote booster to make the clutch lighter?

I have a mid 60s 55 series cruiser and it has a remote brake booster im wondering if somthing like this is my answer? I would rather find one out of another car and not rat it out of the 55.

Would be awesome if some one is able to tell me what to do here. I can drive the car but it dose take a little joy out of it. My boy is gutted because even with two feet on the pedal he can not push the clutch and drive my new truck

Is a brake and clutch booster the same? can i use a brake one? It has to be remote not a lot of room in there

my TD VX 80series has a boosted clutch, the clutch booster is a lot smaller than the brake. Maybe source a brake booster from a small car?
There would be no reason you couldnt remote mount a booster for the clutch, just have to figure it out

Both my middys have had clutch boosters, they are much smaller in diameter than a brake booster though. The petrol clutch booster is the same as a 60 series unit more or less and goes in the engine bay and sticks out a long way from the fire wall. The BJ74 unit is under dash, I have one here you can use to mock up if you want (currently doesnt work though). The BJ74 unit requires a specific master cylinder though.

You'd probably have better luck getting a 60 series booster, as some of the 'g pack' models had them (probably the later ones). THe only 80's i've seen with them are the sahara and vx imports.

The small car booster might be worth a look in. Hopefully someone will do a write up because there has been talk about it, but seeminly nothing done. Which is a shame because a heavy duty clutches are popular, but also bad ergonomically.

I will keep the post going because i WILL do it. My booster will have to be remote so any input/advise on remote boosters would be gratly appreciated

I assume all the bostes spoke about above are fixed to the fire wall the same as my brake one is now?

Some rod rod parts manufacturers might do a remote clutch booster. I know RRSonline http://www.rrs-online.com.au/boosters.phpdo a brake/clutch combo for the early falcons and mustangs... but that will be no good to you...

Maybe something similar?

PBR VH series are a remote mount system, I hade mine for the BRAKES (not clutch) mounted under the floor in my EH ute

as above ...go with either vh40 or vh44 they are cheap of ebay
easy to setup and stash it out of the way ...
but a big tip get a vacum tank will help alot with running both brake and clutch with boosters

awesome guys thanks ill go looking. Any air tigt tank will be ok as a vacue tank? just like fitting a air tank?

would i run just the standard vacume line i have now into it?

yeah just the standard line is good but you need to fit a inline valve between tank and manifold so it stays pressurised

so connections as follows
manifold to
inline valve to
tank to both
brake + clutch boosters

you can get the inline valve from a nissan pulsar n13 n14..it in the middle of there booster hose they work well

For those interested in this thread.

It will be a good few weeks by the time i get around to starting this peice in the puzzle but ill update this thread when i start on the remote clutch booster.

you should be able to get a tank from a bj or other diseasel as most run a pump and tank

just a thought, but did you try the v6 surf/4runner clutch setup? its all inside the firewall.
they maybe a differnt bore size to hilux?

No i did not i will one day probably im bidding on them on ebay all the time just can not seem to find the right one at the right price atm.

Called into the local brake place I get my bits and pieces from and had a chat to them about the clutch. They were the ones that had the clutch built for me plus sleeved the slave cylinder down so it needed less fluid there fore allowing the hilux master cylinder to work with the landcruiser slave thats what has magnified the pedal being even heavier.

They said a new remote brake booster is approx $400 and a new vacuum tank is around $200 they are suggesting I might find that the booster will want to displace to much fluid and the pedal be to light. They are very keen to see what the end result is as it is uncharted for them. They have also suggested using the VH44 as it is the smaller unit than the VH40.

Next week I am going to remove the booster from the 55 series I have here and Tempory connect it using the vacuum line that goes to the brakes just to see how it works before I go buying bits and pieces. If it dose displace to much fluid I will first fit a standard landcruiser slave cylinder as it required more that’s what started the whole problem lol

If anyone has a secondhand VH44 remote booster, vacuum tank or none return valve for sale please PM me im keen if the price is right there are heaps on ebay but if can help a fellow 4 wheeler im happy.

For a booster tank, go for something off an early cruiser. 1980-1984 BJ42. They have a massive vac tank booster under the passengers feet. It comes with its own stone guard and is remote mounted.

No hope of fitting that but thanks anyway.

A VH 44 is what i need i have been watching and bidding on a few but im hoping one will go for under $100 when i can not wait any longer i will just pay what i have to and buy one. Working on other things on the truck atm.

sorry guys. It is 100% definatly going to happen but I have done nothing about it yet. I have got side tracked with clearing a few other projects out of the way first and trying to keep the wife happy lol.

Hey guys

I spoke to Terry at hydroboost yesterday, http://www.hydroboost.com.au/index.htm and he said he has done many booster assited clutches He said the only drama that you can sometimes have is the clutch pedal is slow to return, so if that is the case you wont be able to slam through the gears fast, he said it is one of them things you can't predict unless you try it. So i have a vh44 booster and i will be fiting it to my pos in the next week or so, so i will report back on how it goes
