Ok ive got a 2000 gu patrol 5spd with a ZD30 in it. It has gone boom already just wondering what i should do while rebiulding it to make it last, its only a tow car for my gq/daily driver and is bog stock. I was thinking 3inch exaust, engine oil cooler and new injectors while doin the rebiuld. Thoughts would be great cheers. Put a td4.2 in it is nt in the budget.

get rid of teh Patrol ZD30 and go the Navara ZD30 with its standard wategate Turbo setup, doesn't seem to have any problems like the GU ZD30.

If you have a dig around (as i'm sure you have), you'll find that the actual hardware side of the ZD30 is quite good, but they are really let down by poor management, ie. fuel and boost.

Have a look around on here and patrol4x4.com, as one of the two sites has a "make your ZD30 bulletproof" checklist on it.

Some basic items i'd suggest:

- Get a quality pyro gauge
- Get a quality boost gauge

There are a few other mods like PCV mods, fitting better quality components to the boost control side of things, and also fitting a decent oil catch can.

I always thought they went boom because of a lack of oil to the piston skirts. I think the later model engines had modified piston galleries to lubricate this area better.

High EGT's from overfuelling was the cause for most holed pistons IIRC, and no doubt high EGT's and high boost is the cause of a lot of turbo failure too. Excessive blowby reads as fuel, ECU adds boost to compensate for extra "fuel", more blowby is created etc. etc.

I'm sure one of the guru's can add/correct this - whitiepatrol4x4 off here is a bit of a ZD30 fan and knows the mods needed to save them.

I know of at least one ZD30 Navara that went boom also.......
And blew two turbos before that :?

But other than that I can only agree with the things already mentioned,
Boost and EGT gauges, at least you know once something is wrong and you can back off/shut down.

Other ZD30 owners will add, check patrol4x4.com, wealth of knowledge on ZD30s there.

We have 1 at work we brought it after it had gone boom number three piston let got my father also has one hasn't gone bang but it was getting low on power we how out the the mass air flow meter in the zd30 after it has done a few kms get shit on them and give a false reading running the engine lean and I don't no why but number 3 piston seems to be the one that lets go.
If you haven't changed the air flow meter it will go bang again sooner rather than later . You will find you will get more power back when you put a new one on. I would change the air flow meter ever 50 to 100 thousand or if you fell you have lost power. It worked on both zd30s we have.
