hey guys just found this site looking for ways to get my nissan patrol 1999 model 2.8 st a guy on here called mr green had the same problems. you take off at the lights and some times it will shudder or loose power at aroud 15000rpm or just below then it will take off and smoke will coe out the bqack it only does it for about 2 seconds but it only does it some times. some days its bad and does it right up to 4th gear other days it wont do it at all no matter how much you try and make it. replaced the maf cause thought that was prob. have fitted new fuel and air filters. but no luck. it onley did it after nissan replaced the main crank seal and ajusted the timing cause they said it was a bit out. it has 250,000 on the clock great car just want this problem gone so frustrating. nissan said they recon it is a faulty wire taht goes from the timing to fuel pump but have spoke to machanics and they dont recon that is the problem

Careful....
Mine started doing that about 6 months before the timing belt idler pulley departed the engine. This was soon followed by the engine doing the fastest impression of a boat anchor you have ever seen.
The bearing on the idler pulley failed and started to put drag on the timing belt and so changed the timing slightly. It explains some of the weird things that my engine was doing. They are much the same as what you describe.
It cost me a new engine. BIG COIN for a $20 part.
I would seriously get it checked out.

I should probably explain that I replaced my 2.8 with a TD42.
No more timing belt problems now.
