Thinking of upgrading to a Disco from the trusty Paj. Been looking for a manual TDi300 SE or thereabouts but the seem over-priced to me...
Am I just a mega tight arse or does the diesel REALLY comand almost twice the price of its V8 Petty bretheren???

Here's what ive found recently: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... K:MEWAX:IT

Its auto, and I did ultimatly want manual so the second question is, is it worth the hassle of trying to convert to manual or stick with the auto? Its going to be my DD and I will aim to run a 32 or 33 one day (16" equiv), fuel economy is parramount as is reliability.

I have a heap more questions, but I mainly want to know what sort of dollars i should be looking to spend on similar vehicles.

Thanks Guys.

Ha ha - I love the item description. Watch for him listing a V8 disco in coming weeks - I don't think he'll find the v8 tows his boat much better!

And yes, the diesels have always commanded a much higher price than the V8s - they use about 40% less fuel, which I suspect has a lot to do with it. Tends to make the V8 undesirable for many. Converting an auto to a manual should be pretty straightforward, the only thing I can't remember is whether the trans tunnel hole is the right size and location on a disco. Might require cutting....

The question is why? By the time you buy the gearbox and other bits, and root around fitting it all, you may as well just have bought the manual instead (considering the starting price of that car, if it were $3000 it might make more economic sense). You can't use a V8 manual box, as the input shafts are different (along with internal bearings, bigger in the diesel IIRC), so the donor box needs to be out of a diesel. And Rover gearboxes usually aren't cheap, unless you can find someone privately wrecking a car who is prepared to let one go cheap.

Isnt the inter-webs a small place, I was watching ur disco when it was on the bay a while back!

I have been told that the Manual boxes behind the TDi's are a little weak and prone to failing, as is the case with the (V8i) rangies as well, is this the case or is this mearly a wives tale??

$6500 for a 98 tdi with 182k doesn't seem to bad to me. Your not expecting to pick one up for half of that are you?? If they were that cheap in WA I probably would have picked one up to replace my 97 v8 by now...

Edit* thats the starting bid. Still if it goes for that it would be a bargain.

Never heard that one before, I haven't had any dramas. There are a lot of myths surrounding the land rover legend

Not the full story.

Early Tdi's and rangies have an LT77 manual gearbox that is not a strong box, but OK with the rover Tdi or V8. The LT77 was replaced by the R380, which is an upgrade from the LT77 with wider gears and larger bearings. The 1st version of the R380 has a design flaw (stress raiser) and some are reputed to break shafts (none that I know of personally), but this was fixed and gears and bearings enlarged further in the next version. The R380 in a 98 disco is a strong version.

The splines on the gearbox output shaft and mating input gear in the transfer case will wear (and eventually strip) when the early input gear is used. This has been fixed by longer splines and drilling the input gear to allow oil to lubricate the splines. 98 disco will have the latest input gear.
