Which Patrol?
Which Patrol?
I've just sold my Mitsu Pajero SWB (on 33" MTs) in order to get myself a LWB Patrol.
I was looking at the 2.8L Diesel online, there are loads of them but then got warned off them by a mechanic. He said go for the 3.0 or 4.2, or 4.5 Petrol on gas.
I'd prefer a diesel though.
Is he correct? What should I go for?
I want something I can go touring in (Melbourne to Darwin next winter) but still lift, winch and put 33" MTs on for some weekend offroading. I've started looking at sub 200,000km GUs for under say $20,000 (AUS), look to be getting a 2000 or 2001 model for that. but which engine do you reckon? Sub 200,000km should give me plenty of life yet eh? Another 150-200,000?
thanks for your help

Re: Which Patrol?
If you're set on a diesel then pay the extra and get the 4.2, you won't regret it.

Re: Which Patrol?
Ok well here are your Options
in the GQ range between 88 and 97 you can get the following
4.2l Prerol These came in Carbi and EFI from 92 on. The Carby chews a bit of juice especally when towing, also the early 88 to 91 Carbi motors are prone to cracking the heads, the EFI ones are less likely to, also EFI is slightly better on fuel and a bit better power but not much
4.2L Diesel This motor by far is Nissan's most popular motor and for good reason, They are strong motor that if looked after will give you a million miles plus. There are no Factory Turbo models in the GQ range but you can get Turbo kits for them for $3-4K to get more power out of them. between 93 and 95 the Motor changed to having lighter pistons and aren't as good for turboing.
3.0L Petrol Between 88 and 92 Nissan decided for a cheaper option, took the RB30 skyline motor, removed the EFI and stuck a carbi on it, the result is the RD30S motor that is put into some patrols, this is a 6cylinder inlne engine. they rev hard but putting it into a big truck they chew fuel and you have to rev them to get any power out of them. You can do an EFI cnversion and throw a turbo on it from the Holden VL series to give it more power but then your still using alot of fuel to get power
2.8L Turbo Diesel After phasing out the 3L petty Nissan needed a cheaper option to the 4.2L Petty and Diesel engines, the result is the 2.8L RD28T motor. For such a heavy truck the RD28T is extremly under powered, without reduction gears anythig above stock tyres off road you will be very sorry as they have no torque and no power to keep up with the 4.2's. They are also known for head issues and leaking injector pumps.
In the GU's from 98 to 2010
4.5L Petrol THis motor was the upgrade on the 4.2L EFI. It uses the same bottom end but has a new head and a longer stroke. There are no head cracking issues with this motor but they are just as heavy on fuel and the 4.2L engine, even worse if you tow, for their size you don't get much more power than the 4.2L engine
4.2L Diesel (Turbo) Int he GU range there are 3 variants of the 4.2L Diesel. There is the Natural Aspirated engine which is the very same that was put into the last of the GQ's. A factory turbo option is also availible and also a Intercooled Turbo version in the last series. The TD42Ti uses a ECU and adds some electrical crap to the Injector pump, just more to go wrong, if you really want best option is a TD42T with a aftermarket Intercooler.
2.8L Tubro Diesel the 2.8L Turbo diesel motor made it wasy into the GU line with a few upgrades, the Injector pump got more electronic controls that are know to go on it as well as an Intercooler to help bolster power, they are still as underpowered as the GQ version, without transfer gears they are useless off road.
3.0L Turbo Diesel This is the motor that has caused Nissan to loose so much credit with having a reliable engine. With the 4.2L Diesel now phased out Nissan has relied too heavy on the ZD30DDET engine. It is a 3L Turbocharged Intercooled Electtronic diesel engine that is nicknamed the Hand Grenade for the simple fact buy one and wait for it to explode. While claims that they have been fixed are out, engines all the way up to 2009 go boom, so its a buy at your own Risk
4.8L Petrol This motor is by far the crowning achievement from Nissan. The TB48E engine is an EFI DOHC 24 Valve engine. Using the TB42 bottom end with a larger bore and stroke the TB48 manages to get extremly good power while getting lightly better fuel economy than the original 4.2L engine under controled condition however use the big right boot and you will soon notice you will need a fuel truck following you. One major disadvantage to the 4.8L is you can't have it in a Manual, they are 5 speed Triptronic Auto only, there were a few early 4.8's with manuals byt these engines didn't have the same power output as the new 4.8L engine.

Fantastic response - thanks!
I reckon from what you (both) say, a 4.2L diesel is the one to look out for.
Thanks again.

Re: Which Patrol?
Another vote for the TD42.
Re: Which Patrol?
TD42 for the win, but not exactally the most powerfull 4.2 diesel out there.
if ya do get one id be lookin at gettin at least a stage 1 pump tune. other that that you can walk faster.

Re: Which Patrol?
My stock TD42 NA smokes up 35's ok and holds 140kph on the freeway no drama's (Cant wait to put the turbo on )... I see where your getting at though... If I had heaps of coin to waste and heaps spare time to repair a toyota Id have one... Mind you theirs heaps of spares for toyota's out in the bush... there's sooooooooo many toy wrecks out there... wonder why???TWITCHIN wrote:TD42 for the win, but not exactally the most powerfull 4.2 diesel out there.

Re: Which Patrol?
TD4.2 = original donkimobile.
Underpowered, over-built, under-stressed, and low-tech. Doesn't like to rev, doesn't make much power but designed and built to survive nuclear warfare.

Re: Which Patrol?
In Safari trim, there is a TD42t, i think between 1994 and 1997 and in some an automatic behind it as well.
89 gq dx. bone stock --- for now.
Re: Which Patrol?
i haven't seen any Imports (safari's) with Turbo's on them but yes there are auto's. Problem is they are 24v setup

Re: Which Patrol?
put a vid up, ill belive it when i see it and how many revs, govener perhaps . why do you need a turbo, it smokes those massive 35's remeber . just remember why they use toyotas out there..cause its the only thing that lasts and that has over 500,000kms on em, ive seen more trolls on the side of the road then yotas, ya never see a datsun out there cause they never left the showroom floor. remember that zd30 they built oh and the TD42 GU/Y61 radiators that hang so low that are just waiting to get hit and are to small for the engine so when ya tow they over heat . its a bout $1200 for an adrad heavy duty radiator to fix it. i work for a guy who is a nissan nut, i work on these things every single day, had 6 of em in today just as an examplle and all were repairs. havent seen a toyota for a repair in 4 months. im not startin the whole toyota/nissan saga, all i am doin is givin some knowledgeable advice to someone lookin for info. all i say is go for the td42 But it would be good practice to do a stage 1 tune to make it move bit faster and better exhaust system to help it breathe, also check the gause filter in the injector pump isnt full of crap (if it has one fitted) they restrict diesel flow through the pump when they are blocked therefore giving you another lack in power. just tryin to help with the knowledge and experence i have gained over the years.steve patrol wrote:My stock TD42 NA smokes up 35's ok and holds 140kph on the freeway no drama's (Cant wait to put the turbo on )... my '98 ST 4.5L Auto doesn't really drink all that much(15-17L/100klm), well not compared to my last few 4wds(pajero(18-20L/100klm), range rover(22L/100klm), Terracan(17-19L/100klm)MyGQ wrote:4.5L Petrol THis motor was the upgrade on the 4.2L EFI.
