Gday guys. I have done a full circle and looking at losing my 5" coils and running air bags so I can just lower it if the federally's are near by :). Is air bags illegal??

I hope not. I'm putting air springs in my truck for similar reasons (on/off road ride height) and because the ride is so good when long trips involve lots of corrugations. I have the air springs but not fitted yet. I'm currently in NSW where they are legal, but moving to QLD soon.

New regs (VSI50) coming in for suspension in NSW allow air springs, but must not be able to change height while moving (unless original equipment, such as range rover).

no its not illegal. Range rovers have it etc.

However, for you to modify a vehicle and install an airbag system (that is adjustable by anything more than physically attaching a compressor to a shroeder valve). You will need to prove that your suspension complies with all relevant ADR's, has safety systems in place such that the bags cannot be adjusted whilst driving, return to ride hide when vehicle is in motion (or wont let the car out of park if its on its arse), etc etc.

Basically it is too hard, but not impossible.

My mate had bags in his hilux 2wd, and was told when defected that he had to apply to QLD transport for the modification, full specs of what he is doing, Why he is doing it, How he is doing it, and evidence that his proposed system meets all current adr's etc.

He de-registered the car and sold it lol.

The way I see it, it depends on how you plan to use the bags to fool the coppers.

Setting it up so it is around 2 inch all the time onroad taking into account tyre clearance, rather than just dropping pressure when you see a cop would be more successful. This way you'd have to set caster up to be correct at 2 inches. Then when you are off road, and need the height you manually adjust.

Apart from some aggressive looking tyres it would appear to be a fairly normal 4wd.

I was told by a Qld transport inspector that he has never seen a complete air bag set up past in Brisbane. He said they will not pass it because if a bag fail it will drop. This was 12months ago dont think much would have changed it is DOT we are talking about. Good luck with it though.

Sounds like crap. If a steel spring breaks it will drop, and think what happens when you break leaves in a leaf sprung truck.

There are also plenty of air sprung vehciles out there. I remember an old falcon fairlane with a full air rear, the p38a range rovers had them, and new discos and rangies have that option.
