What year did IFS arrive on hilux's?

I am getting way to many different answers on this question from people, does anyone know when:

The xtra cab lux went to IFS?

The Dual cab went to IFS?

was it different depending on models? diesel/petrol or sr5 etc.?

A mate of mine is looking for one, but he wants a live front axel. Preferably a later model,

All hiluxs come std IFS after 11/97 but before that i think 4 runners and SR5's started about '87

I could be wrong but im pretty sure

4runners came out in IFS late 85 and 2nd gen luxs sr5`s

the ifs came on the SR5's

the difference between thr sr5's and the normal are (from what ive seen)

sr5 has carpet flooring, cloth seats and some cloth on the doors the normal has vinal foor, vinal seats and plastic doors.
sr5 has hookless tray and no cage around the rear window
sr5 has smaller t-case
and thats all i can think off.

My 1990 dual cab SR5 has leafs all round. Haven't seen many others like it. But it must have meant that SR5's never went to IFS until (guessing) about 1993.

The early SR5's never had:

hookless tray,
chrome door handles or mirrors or bumpers or grille,
auto hubs.

Which is good cause I would never pay extra money for that.

don't know what year but tell your mate that it dosn't matter if it is ifs (at the right price ) he can always sas it that is what ive done and if you can find the right seller it's supprising how much they will come down when told the bad points of ifs :armsup:

The last live axel Hilux's were in 96-97. Nov 97 onwards are all IFS.
The 5 in SR5 is reference to them having a 5 speed gearbox. A very big deal in 87 as I recall. Shit, now I feel old! :cry: Something like having 5 speed auto's and 2.4+ reduction t/fer cases now.

Eh? in 87 the 5 speed and already been around for a couple of years.

I thought the xtra cab only came in SR5. Therefore only came with IFS?

The extra cab came in other models as well my mate had one with solid axles allround with the petrol motor was alright until he wrote it off

My understanding was that the '89 onwards xtra-cab only came as an SR5 and never got leaf suspension all round.
These days though it's the other way around... you can only get an xtra-cab as a 'standard' model, but who wants a new one anyway :lol:

Mine is a genuine 90 SR5 xtra cab with 2.8D , some people are not too fond of IFS but i love it, and you definately cant beat cupholders, going to maccas without cupholders can be a bit scary, those plastic lids on the coke come off easy when you got the cup between your legs, bugger.

This is the gear my SR5 has and its factory.

Push button auto locking hubs, need i say more..
Standard factory AC .. need i say more
Larger capacity longer range fuel tank.
Carpet flooring, cloth seats and cloth trim on the doors .
Chrome bumpers
Chrome door handles "mine has got standard black, they might have not had chrome in the earlier models" grrr! :x
Oh yes and the lifesaving cupholders :lol:

Yes later model xtra cabs came out with leaf suspension all round although they were not SR5.

Are you trying to say this is a good thing?
My 97 extra cab SR5 has manual locking hubs and Im thankfull for it too!
The ADD system is prone to failure and puts more wear and tear on CV joints and front diff components.

PS yes the cupholders are handy. I just wish they made one that fitted a choc milk carton though.

Well mine has not failed yet and i'm thankfull for that!!

Is it a good thing? well when i dont have to take my fat arse out of the car to engage all wheels , hell yes !!! especially if your already in some mud! You see Toyota are very smart, when they decided to put the cloth trim and carpet in the SR5's they knew that when a man has to get out of the car to lock the hubs it would be very difficult to keep the interior nice and clean, and thats where they came up with the idea of push button 4x4 :cool:

Yes you might be able to fit your carton in the cupholder, just put the carton on top of one of the circles and mark it out , get one of those small hacksaws and cut carefully at the markings , then get a fine file to fix up all the edges and presto a cupholder that will hold 1 choc milk carton and a maccas cup ;)
I have already measured it up , it will work the only drawback is that the carton will not sit directly at the base of the cupholder but it will still hold.

But on a serious note yes your right they are prone to failure, i just hope mine dont fail. :)

Wow, I think I've just met someone who likes their xtra-cab more than me... :oops:

I actually plan to remove the ADD setup on my truck and install manual hubs at some stage. It will decrease wear on the front drive components and free up some more space in the engine bay for other cool things like a 2nd battery.

I had to remove the cupholders as my truck goes just so damn fast. All beverages must be safely secured in my belly, or a sealed container. :D

Really? I would love the thought of a post 1990 extracab with leaves all round but $1,000,000 says you couldn't buy one from toyota. Melbourne city council bought heaps of xtracabs, took the utw backs off them and set them up for general maintenance duties with dropside trays. I think mebourne city toyota did this for them. This was in the early 90's.

These were definitely NOT SR5 spec as they were all white , had silver painted wheels with road grippers (not grandteks :armsup:) and looked pretty basic. they were, however, totally 100% IFS.

The IFS chassis is (as you are all aware) considerably different for the gen3 'lux, with longer rear springs etc, and the extracab lux has a longer wheelbase than the leaf all 'round lux. I do not beleive that toyota ever teamed the long rear spring/extra LWB/chindrive transfer ADD type chassis (extracab) with leaves inthe front, as this combination woudl have been somthing of a one off.

Thats another thing you just reminded me of that Im thankfull for :)
I have a gear drive transfer in mine (with lower gearing c/o Marks and duals are on the cards later) :armsup: .

So the 90s extra cabs were available without ADD and without chain drive, but were never available with solid front.

I'm willing to bet good money that ALL IFS Gen3's are chaindrive. Can anyone confirm this?

wrong, you can (well you personally cant) get a brand new 166 hilux that has a gear driven transfer, there are only 150 of these in australia, there is also an older model which i think is a 117 which also has a geardrive.

I stand corrected , now that i think about it, i dont think there were any xtra cabs with leaf fronts, my mistake, And yes i do love my extra cab alot more.
