Power Steering Instalation

hi

i am about to attempt to install power steering into an old 88 dx feroza.

does anyone have any advise on what to look out for when trying to do this????

As Ferozas came with factory power steer, assuming you have all the bits, its going to be dead straighforward.
There's a slight song and dance required to bleed teh system according to the manual but its never given me any grief.

What are you going to do for upper body exercise now that the manual box is gone ?

Just make sure you have the correct pulleys. I believe there may be several different types, requiring different belt.

is it worth doind a rebuild or any maintanance on it before i install it???

thanks for the help, looking at it i think i can see the bolt holes for the resovour so hopefully the rest will be there too

kay, next hitch;

how does one remove the steering mechanism from the steering column???

How hard and dangerous is it to do this part of the operation yourself???

Im considering getting a mechanic to do the rest of this, because i dont want to put it all together and find myself with wacked out steering or wrapped around a telegraph pole

to be honest it looks kind of self explanitory but as with most things, there is an easy way and a hard way. should i pull out the whole column instead. is that easier?

also any info regarding how to centre the steering mechanism once i get it in would be good. i assume that groove at the top of the splined attatchment on the steering mechanism goes up fror centre? dont have a photo of this at the moment.

I speak with no authority here, but if its anything like the charade, there will be a missing tooth on the splines (both mating parts) and they will only slide together one way....

Turn wheels to one side completely
Unbolt the screw within the red circle above, to loosen the column from the mechanism
Pull back the telescopic column from the mechanism
Take out the mechanism
Put the new back on and before putting the column back in turn it with your hand to be facing the same direction as the wheels.

If you do not take the mechanism apart the worst thing that you can do is not to be able to turn completely nothing more......

ok done. im not mega confident this is going to turn out perfect bit its progressing at least. What tool do i need to get the pitman arm off the steering rack? (not the steering box). i got this balljoint hammer thing but its not working. The pitman arm on the ps box is new

The Feroza does not have a "Steering Rack" the pitman arm goes onto the steering box and the tie rod ( the bit between the Pitman arm on one side and the idler arm on the other )

Ball joint tools usually do the job. Wind the pressure on - then give the side of the joint a bang with a hammer. The shock usually does the trick. You can put lots of pressure on and get nowhere - one wack and off it comes :-)

Yeah sorry, you knew what i meant though, :lol:

What are your thoughts on the method mitsos describes above to install the power steering box properly onto the steering column??? i want to nail this and not have to pull it all apart again. My logic says to do it centred, or try at least.

The manual explains how to remove and replace the steering box. it says to mark the join between the steering column and a p/s box, so you put it back in the same place. it doesnt explain how to replace the steering box with another steering box, one that could be in any position. it looks however centred, and if i was the mechanicthat pulled it off, i would have centred it.

There does not appear to be a spline missing as far as i can see on the box or the steering column for easy allignment

Oh no, right at the finnish line it appears i have hit a brick wall.

Does one of these air hoses attatch here, cuz i hope not???? it appears that i do not have a place to put this hose

Theres a valve on the PS pump that takes air from before the throttle and feeds it back in after. This is so that when you turn the steering wheel ( apply extra load to the motor ) it doesn't stall at idle. Its basically an idle up valve....

The other "funny "valve is also an idle up mechanism used by the airconditioning system to give a faster idel when the AC is on. The white adjuster lets you set the actual speed. There's a small solenoid valve wired into the electrics that controls the valve.

since i dont gave a hole for the p/s idle up, could i send it in through the a/c idle up instead? it looks like that goes in through one of those two bolt holes up the top of the motor?

also do you know if the idler pulley fot the feroza is the same as on the applause? I am not expecting this part to be easy to find. i didnt get one of them in my kit

if you could check that out for me, that would be awesome, i will most likely be able to get a applause one from the wreckers on the weekend, but a feroza one will require some serious seaerching most likely
