lifted bush tourer: Diesel or Petrol/Gas ?

Just sold my SWB Pajero wanting something bigger and better. Originally looking at 4.2L Diesel Patrol GU, but there ain't many around. Now I'm looking for 4.2 diesel Landcruiser, but seems might be more Petrol/Gas examples around?

Trying to get something around 1999-2000, around 200K on clock. To be honest I'm worried about getting a petrol/gas and then not able to afford the fuel to go touring up to NT (from Melbourne). Will it cost around the same on gas as it will on diesel (taking into account fuel costs)?

I expect to put it on 33"s with say 2-3" lift. More interested in med-long range touring in the bush than climbing in and out of huge mud holes.

Should I stick with trying to find something I want in diesel, or just go for the petrol/gas?

Thanks for your help

Some fuel consumption info for the 4.5L petty in the Landcruisers:
I've got a 100 series (105) 4.5L petrol/gas - approx 26L/100 gas, unsure of fuel.
75 series Ute 4.5L, gas 25L/100, petrol 15-16L/100. The ute has dual 85-odd Litre tanks, 90 usable gas, so i've got a range of about 1200-1400kms between fuel stops depending on load and driving conditions. ( I wouldn't run it right to the 1400km mark to be safe though)

I have an 80 petrol/gas but with 6" lift (4" coil 2" body) and 35's. Touring loaded i was getting as bad as 30l/100km. Stopping every 300km to fill up really shitted me and thats if i could find gas. Gonna get a big lpg tank fitted in the back before my next trip.

just thought id add some info on a diesel 100 series, mine is a 4.2 1hz with turbo, 2inch lift, 33muddies and setup with front and rear bars, draws, rooftop tent and all the goodies, (thanks to working in a 4x4 shop), im averaging 13.5L/100km and using the original tanks (145L) get 1000-1150kms.
