Range Rover LT230?

I have a 1991 rangy and have found that they have the LT230 in them, but I also found out that some are manually locked and some are electric? can any one tell me as how I can determine which one it has? elect / man. And if electric, can it be manuel? as I would like to use it in a comp car.

I've not heard of an electric locked LT230. At some point in time, rangies changed to the borgwarner t/case with viscous coupling - I haven't had anything to do with them.

LT230's (except some without centre diff locks) have a short lever on top of the front extension housing for operating the centre diff lock - bottom right corner of this pic. The stubby lever in driver's cabin for changing between high and low range (forward/back movement) is pushed left/right to lock/unlock the centre diff - this push/pulls the linkage connected to the short lever on top of the front extension housing.

Edit: have just looked on Ashcroft's web site http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk ... at&catId=5 and it appears that classic rangies have the borgwarner t/case from 1989 onward. However yours may have had problems with the viscous coupling and a previous owner replaced the t/case with an LT230. Look at the linked page on Ashcroft's site.

Thanks John as I was reading a wikipedia style web page about the electric thing but they said the classic as of 1985 got the LT230. Where I got the rangy from did not know, so I looked in the cab today for a lever or switch to centre lock. Your pic is brilliant I can see clearly what I'm looking!
Will check it out tomorrow.

Do you know here and $ to get reduction gears from? 0429193238.

Hi Maxtrax

I have a 1993 RRC which an LT230 T/case from a Defender bolted to the ZF ,the old Borgwarner Transfer case was problematic. I also run 33" tyres and it seems to cope fine with Standard Diff Ratio 3.54 .

for Reduction Gears you can call MR Automotive.

Unless the LT230 was retro fitted your rangie will have a borg warner viscous transfer, so if transfer lever doesnt move L/R that is what you have . They were never electriacally operated from the factory but kits are available for certain D2 models that didnt have the difflock ability but the guts were there in the TC for it.

Since posting that, I recall that there was a kit with electric actuator to fit on top of LT230's from some year model disco II's that came out without a diff lock lever. The don't have a good rep for reliability.

I think it was AMV or someone in Melbourne that did the electronic kit. It was based on a windscreen wiper motor and apparently didn't cope with mud too well.

Someone ages ago also posted me this. Very cool, especially if you're setup for airlockers!
