Landcruiser 105 series freeplay in drive-train

Hi,

I have a free play in drive-train that is most noticeable when going slowly in high gears for example:

Press and release accelerator while doing 40km/h in 4th gear
Press and release accelerator while doing 60km/h in 5th gear

Not that I am driving my car in those gears all the time but just for the sake of troubleshooting the problem.

The problem appears to be less noticeable when i press "4x4" button.

Problem first appeared after I got bogged into deep roots while offroading

Did anyone have a similar problem?

Yep, Grease your tailshafts really good. But more likely it is freeplay in the front drive flange/outer axle splines, brass bush inside spindle may also need replacing. I recall seeing a kit online somewhere to fix it, but can't recall where. They did say to test it as you did and that it would be quieter or silent when the centre diff is locked.

What tests I need to do to diagnose whether it is front or rear drive shaft?

Sorry, may not have explained it properly. If greasing the tailshafts doesn't fix it, it is more than likely a problem in the front axle housing. The splines at the outer ends of the axles (out past the CV joint) and the 'drive flange' may be worn. I still can't find where I seen the kit to fix it though.
