hi all, new to the website and was hoping anyone with some knowledge into gq v8 conversions could throw some ideas my way as in the next 12 months i am hoping to purchase a gq patrol and put a holden v8 into it, which is the best engine to go for, stick with the 5.0l or 5.7l? and is there any particular year patrol that this is best to do with

any info much appreciated thnx.

				LS1
Cheap
Good on fuel
Easy to find parts
HEAPS of power
Easy to get huge power from if heaps isnt enough
Light weight
304
Cheaper
Crap on fuel
Cheaper to get another engine if it has a problem
stuff all power
expensive to get more power from
Heavy

When buying a patrol make sure it has a 4.2 or bigger engine. Nissan also made 3litre petrol and 2.8 litre diesel patrol, these use a smaller weaker gearbox I don't know of anyone making gearbox adaptors for these. If you do end buying one with a smaller gearbox you can swap the bigger gearbox in, gearbox usally sell for $500. You will also need to change the drive flanges on the diffs and the drive shafts as they are in different sizes.
Friend of mine has a holden 308 in his patrol with a 355 stroker kit, cam a bit of head work and an aftermarket Ecu. For the amount of money spent the performance was not that great.
Recenlty went for a ride in an 80 series landcruiser with a 6litre Ve engine in it and was very impressed. If I was to use holden V8 this would be my pick of engines.

the 304 is only about 15/20kgs heavy than an ls1 so not much of a weight saver.
304 do have better low down torque than a ls
but for the effort i would go an ls

thanks. ive also heard that the 5.0l is stronger then an ls1 tho, is this true?
i thought about the 6.0l but do they make the conversion kit to do it into a gq patrol? which of the v8 does anyone think would be best for pulling a trailer?

i also meant to say that this is going to be 90% road usage for pulling a trailer if that makes any difference on which engin would be better, no real serious offroading for couple of years. thanks

LS1 conversion or LS2 if you can afford the 6L variant. the 304 is too under torqued compared to the LS1. seen the LS1 outperfom the 5L v8 hands down in the bush and on road the extra horses under the bonnet for towing will make a world of difference

Hey v8 is the way just to throw it out the how about the Duramax diesel V8?
Check out the various threads on the forum.
This engine will have everything you need and more, loads of torque and even loads of power.

				1st pick - Duramax if you have the dollars - $35000 - $40000
2nd Pick - L98 6 litre - $18000ish
3rd - LS1 5.7 - $15000ish
4th - 5litre, never done one, wouldn't do it either
Prices are drive in drive out, cheaper if you are doin the work.

				Holden 304 + cam change
Vortech V2 SQ supercharger with 12psi
Methanol/water injection with a hobbs switch set for 10-11psi (or a full throttle switch)...
Let you know in a few months what it goes like after I put mine together
Better yet get the new yella terra whipple charger...Mmmmm!!!

i'l let everyone know how the yella terra whipple goes when i whack it on!
mine arrived last week, awsome bit of gear

but yes a 5.0l conversion is alot cheaper then most but unless you spend money back on the engine it will disappoint..

IF YOUVE GOT AROUND 20K AND TIME ON YOUR HANDS 6L THE BEST WAY TO GO. IVE GONE FROM 5L TO 6L AND OH YEAH BABY IT WILL GIVE YOU EVERY BIT OF GRUNT YOULL EVER NEED. 410 HP AT THE F/W STOCK MOTOR WITH AUTRONIC COMPUTER. THE HEADS FLOW REALY WELL STOCK SO WITH A SMALL CAM YOU CAN GET ANOTHER 100HP WITH NO HEAD WORK. LOADS OF TALK MORE THAN THE 5.7 L . IV PUT A T400 BEHIND IT WHICH SUCKS 100 HORSIES OUT AT THE WHEELS WITH 37'' TYRES BUT WHO NEEDS THEM. BUT IF YOU WANT A CHEAP 8V TO PUT IN YOUR GQ IVE GOT A 5L STILL BOLTED TO THE MANUALISED T700 AND TRANSFER CASE IN GOOD RUNNING ORDER WITH EXTRACTORS. YOU DO THE MATH, PRICE THE CONVERSION KIT ALONE . IF YOUR NOT PUSHING 37'' TYRES THE HP WILL BE FINE. ITS SITTING ON THE SHED FLOOR IF YOUR INTERSETED 6K THE LOT. BUT IF YOU HAVE THE COIN 6L ALL THE WAY

Its a common misconception. If you overlay a 304 and a LS1 dyno sheet, the 304 has less torque everywhere though the rev range but a flatter curve. The LS1 keeps making power a lot longer and often feels doughy down low as that was the way Holden tuned them to protect the gearboxes from being destroyed.
The LS1 is 220kg (inc all accessories)
The 304 250kg
The 308 280kg

Same conversions available for the SWB as the LWB no difference in engine bays or drivelines other than a shorter rear driveshaft

I'm game enough to say it I have a 304 in a gq ute, internal cage etc not a worked big dollar engine and love it. Have driven a l98 gq and it went well but how much power do you really need. My mrs daily is a STD 4.8 GU and she is impressed with the pick up my gq has in the bush.
If you have loads of money go the best but I personally don't think the 304's are as bad as everyone is making out.

commo seats are commonly put into patrols - from memory you need to put some 20 x 20 or 25 x 25 shs under the door side rail to level it out. but if you search for it you will find specific details.
cheers

Doesn't matter how much power you have once you have done a v8 conversion, you will be looking for more before to long. Hmmmm I better start cracking on my new 408ci ls1 stroker and bigger blower. 500rwkw would be nice.

I have a 351 in my MQ and it goes like a shower of sh*t. It chews the juice tho...
It was a cheap conversion and if you look around, you might find one with work already done to it for cheap like I did...
Also I saw on gumtree the other day and injected 351, with loom, c4 gearbox etc for 1600... All you would need are the adaptor plates and you are set.
