Starter motor strange sound

OK,
Tuesday morning my startermotor solenoid crapped out, which made the motor spin regardless of ignition. Disconnecting the battery was the only thing to stop it.

I replaced the solenoid, and now it is fine, except that there is a rattle when going over bumps, that sounds like coins in the ashtray, but louder, and coming from near the firewall.

What in the startermotor is there that could cause this noise? It works fine, throws out nicely, retracts as well I think.
I know there are plastic mechanisms in there, but could it be something loose or broken inside causing it? The sound does not sound like something hitting the flywheel... Also, the mounting bolts are tight.

EDIT - Sorry, Sierra, 1.3.

Found problem I think...

Somehow dislodged the splash guard, so the front was flapping about.

EDIT - Nope, noise is still there.

Any ideas anyone?

did you have a earth lead on one of the starter bolts and not replace it?

No, everything is bolted back to where it needs to be - I have triple checked everything I can without removing the Smotor, but I guess I have to again.

you are just going to have to talk someone into sitting in the engine bay while you go for a drive.
or just wait for something to become obvious.
