torque convertor diff between 3 and 4 speed auto

decided to go with a 3spd auto for the project insted of the 4spd auto that came with the 1.6 multi, tried fitting it up and misses out by about 5mm, the largest diametrs on the spigots are the same size on both convertors but the 4speed steps down at the front were as the 3 speed is 1 dia all the way along, by my measurements it should fit 
, but i cant seem to get it to, does the front of the 3 speed convertor have to be modded?
