Re: Auto or Manual?
I am in my first auto 4x4 .. I have had Toyota's x3, Suzuki's x2, Nissan's x2 Land Rover x1 and Now a pajero which is Auto .. I will not be buying another manual 4x4 for off road use.
If your driving around the city I would go auto as well .. put your foot down and go .. no point in trying to win the stop light grand prix in a 3.0 paj .. so many as well have the convenience of an auto.

Re: Auto or Manual?
I find Auto is a disadvantage for decending very steep hills ,oh and trying to do clutch starts
For "everthing else" i find auto better !

Re: Auto or Manual?
I've had auto converted my falcon to manual now I have an auto triton personally going back to auto doesn't feel right, I love the manual falcon but there's definitely advantages to each, no hassles with clutch changes and river crossing gearshift issues, but also don't have to worry about the auto making a mistake on which gear it wants, and changing at a bad time. if it's mainly for city driving shouldn't really be the biggest issue either way especially with hydraulic clutch's, still can't believe how light my mates hilux's clutch is compared to the falcons cable clutch, an the falcon never worried me in traffic etc.
Also auto can be a hassle when they shit themselves.

Re: Auto or Manual?
I just went from a 1992 manual 4D56T (2500cc turbo diesel) to a 1995 automatic 4M40 (2800cc turbo diesel) and the difference is unbelievable. The 2.5 (SWB J-Top) was quite nippy, and it did move impressively when the foot was planted, but the 2.8 (SWB Metaltop) auto has an unbelievable performance difference when you put the foot down. Automatics can be fast, the 2.8 glides everywhere when you put the foot down hard, its amazing how quickly the auto can accelerate a 2 ton 4x4 on an uphill stretch of road. Then sitting in traffic too, no need to worry about a clutch, just forget your left foot and move your right from brakes to accelerator... so easy. Plus the sound of the auto-gearbox makes you feel you're driving one of them huge big American taxi's!! Auto for my vote!!
