Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Guys,

A mate is after a small, cheap 4WD he can put moderate lift under and possibly 31's and that's pretty much it. Sierra is out of the question because, for touring/camping duties, it's too small and this it what he mainly wants it for.

Question is, do they have any probs to keep an eye out for and what is the "tallest" tyres they can take with, say an OME lift and NO guard chopping?

1st hand experiences would be great.

A dual cab Hilux would cost the same as a 4 door Vitara.

to get 31's on, you really need the ome lift and a 2inch body lift, even then, you might need to do some inner guard work.

Yeh but he's a real size queen. Hilux is just too big and "truck" like for what he is after.

He wants a Sierra cause he like that way they look but I ain't gunna be draggin all his camping gear around for him so this is the predicament we are in.

Our club has done 2-3 week trips in Sierras without any problems carrying camping gear etc. With good packing you can take everything you need. A fridge, tent, sleeping bag, chair, mattress, a couple of boxes of food, jerrycan of water, spares alll will fit in. We have seen 80 series packed to the rafters and they don't really have a better camping experience.

Just get a lwb sierra if he's that bad a packer

Yep, I agree with the 80's comments entirely but he is a bad packer and has a missus that doesn't understand the meaning of "roughing it".

I made him a deal and said he can test drive a sierra, take it home and if he can pack it with all his cr@p, then I'll let him buy but I was just sourcing some alternatives.

He also has considered a Rocky/Ferosa so you can see what type of vehicle he's aiming for. Kinda counts out the above listed ...

My first car was a sierra and for a lot of things it was good. We went on a number of week long trips in it, but I'll admit that one of the main reasons i got rid of it was because of its size. I could pack everything i needed but that was with a roof rack and the back of it jammed packed and encroaching into the front. This was using small gear too ie bushwalking style tents, sleeping bags etc. It's much better to have a car that you're really happy with, rather than compromising and constantly dreaming of getting something bigger.
Having said that, the Sierra is a bloody good car in a lot of respects, its just not ideal for touring.

Once again, I agree entirely. I told him if he wants it for a play car, up the tracks, on the weekends - Sierra all the way but it'll be the missus daily driver and the weekend/week long camper as well and I know how much it bites to buy something you like, put the time into it and then have to sell it before long because it doesn't really suit you needs.

Sorry you're right. I calculated for a 16" rim because everything I've been calculating lately has been for 16" rims. Yes 29" high and nearly 9.5" wide.
