Gday all:
I had a bit of a problem with backfiring some time back (NL Pajero on gas). Amongst other things, the big bang blew the lid off the air cleaner housing and I lost a couple of clips. ANyone know of anywhere I can get some?

Most wreckers will have em, they are quite a common part.

You can "tighten" them up a bit by popping them in a vice and giving em a bit of a squish lengthways ...

A backfire arrestor may be of use as well .. the bit of Swiss cheese pipe with a neoprene cover .. no issue on vacuum, but with positive pressure it lets it vent to atmosphere quite safely ... 1St one I made seems like 100 years ago for a mate with an XF on gas that used to destroy the gate style air flow meters on a regular basis...
Used a stubby holder .. I am sure there are commercial versions out there now that may be a bit larger and have a bit better flow.

Thanks for the info - we don't have much in the way of wreckers where I live, but I'll try them anyway. The backfire arrestor seems like a brilliant idea to me. Do you have any contacts where I can get one or at least get some idea of what to make up? The air hose is fairly short in my Pajero and also it has a convoluted bend in it before it gets to the inlet manifold, so there isn't much space to put anything in. Having said that, I certainly would like to get something - the existing plugs and leads are only 20000 km old and they recently have gone BANG again - I had a crook batch of gas. I have ordered new plug leads and plugs and when I egt them, I'll install them, hoping that they will reduce the tendency to crossfire.

The idea of a backfire burping out into the engine bay gives me the creeps - big sheet of flame, but it would all be over quickly and hopefully would not ignite anything else.

Thanks for your help with the clips - I got a set from the local wrecker for $2.00. The dealer in Tamworth wanted $15.62 each, and he would have had to order them in! I would still like to know more about the backfire valve when you have the time.
