Weld on tow points

A while ago someone was doing some weld on tow point plates.

Any ideas on who does/carries them? There's no need for official rating as there will be no comp use but they doo need to be safe.

Bloody exspensive option these about $160 each last time i asked, thats $640 for four I changed my mind.

have a fabrication shop laser cut you some, to your design, out of heavy plate?

Probly because he didnt want to pay for custom plates with 4 letters and just worked out the letters on a standard number plate desgin.

I dont think it makes much difference anyway...

Weding can be OK but.. doesnt matter if its for comp use or general recovery, the paramaters are the same.

I test welds as part of my job.
May I sugest that you 'always" put a bolt through as a secondary safety factor.

I would also like to question the fillet size in the pic of Buds above. Withuot seeing it in the flesh it looks to be offset and the throat is too small.

I agree, there is plenty on there, it is probably not the best pic, but I have seen a bit of his work and it has all been spot on.

Out of interest on a similar topic....

Has anyone paid much attention to the CCDA official documentation on recovery points?

They say no to eyelets of any type ( even like M30 6 tonne ones )

They allow cast 'Hooks' the ones you can buy from repco with 2 bolts in them ( no specs on where to bolt them or just through the 2.5mm thick chassis )

They allow a weld on tow hook. No specs on what type, thickness, location or anything.

In some of the comps i have been to recently, ive noticed tow hooks welded to the side of a chassis at the front that cant be more then 5 mm thick....
Leaving that asside.....

A weldon tow hook is only as strong as the weld holding it. Most of these points arent welded by professionals and whether its 10mm, 20mm or 3mm plate, its only as strong as the weld.

A decent coat of paint over a bad weld cant make a weld look good and it passes scrutineering :shock:

Anything less then 8mm will prob bend straight away first snatch you do on a side angle.....

anyone else think the blokes in charge of the spec sheets for these points need to get there heads screwed on?

An eyelet M25 rated at 3.2tonne bolted to 12mm thick bullbar is knocked back, but the 6mm plate welded to the side of the bullbar with a bow shackle in it is allowed :shock:

Eye type hooks are ok IF rated.
Those docs show all points to be Bolted.
