What to do what to do....

Post by V.W.Dave »

Ok so I am soo up in the air over what engine/trans set up to put into my sierra. I need it to handle angles and to have fairly good down low torque. It will not be a daily driver and more then likely it will be a trailer queen comp/play rig in a few months.
Some of you will have seen my build up so far but hose who have not. I have a chopped down swb W/T Sierra I am running 60 sieries diffs, Hilux springs all around on 33s (37s for comps) 98" wheel base, exo, winch, blahh blahh blahh you get the idea.

Here are my options I have and the costs.

G16A vitara on gas with 5speed vitara box twin transfers $900 all up with the gas convert running.
G16B vitara (with only 90ks on it) with vitara 5 speed box twin transfers $1800 all up in and running
CA18 with CA20 auto gearbox $900 with a hell of a lot of fab work to get it in and sitting low.
V6 Bombador with Auto $900 (with bigger radiator and all the other little things needed)even more fab work and it will NEVER get past a engineer if in the future even if want it to.

Every day I flop back and forth between them. But it has come time to make the plans and stick to it
I really want to keep it Suzuki but I didn't want it to spend big bucks. But I want it to be EFI not Gas.
The CA18 is better down low and it has a auto box and that is better then any twin transfer.
If I am going to go through the effort to put a CA18 in why not just do the Bomador V6 and have a VERY VERY cheap to fix engine down the track.

I have the money to do any of them but yahh just cant decide. What do you all think???

G16B with the auto would be the go if you have the cash to do so.

The carby engine with 37's might need some more mojo, even with gears.

Speaking from experience I wouldn't go with the commodore motor as it's too heavy but does have grunt to spare . Definatly I'd be looking long and hard at the g16b with the auto, it would have enough power for the 37s and with the auto it would be alot nicer to the rest of the drivetrain

Yes I know they are heavy but your forgetting mine is not a stocko sierra. Hilus springs and 60 sieries diffs it will hold the weight.

I like the hybrid idea.

I can get a 4 speed auto for a vitara for $600. I may just pay for it and be happy.

Yes I have been watching your build and my zook that has the v6 in is very far from stock. It is also running 60 series diffs with rear steer and dirty 30s. To give you an idea of the weight of the v6 my zook runs standard 80 series coils in the front which compress down to only 300mm when at ride height and don't price a rear drop sump from marks 4x4adapters the price is scary.

I would love to have a small black smoke blower but I cant find one that would be light enough or cheap enough.

I did come across a ford diesel (2.2 or something) not sure exactly with a gearbox for $800 but the guy was very shady and he couldn't tell me anything about either of them.

Has anyone ever put a 2.0 vitara engine in a sierra? Do they use the same trans bell housing as the 1.6? I have never even looked at a 2.0.

I am thinking I am just going to keep it simple and get the Vitara g16b. I also know where there is a Balino dizy engine I can get for $250 but then I would need a vitara cam, angle drive and would need to track down a wire harness and computer.
I can make just about anything work but I already have the vitara gearbox mount made up.

I looked up on the J18,20 and 23A to sierra 5 speed ages ago. Just needs a spline shortening I think and bolts straight up. Bollocks to the boxes not lasting, I've seen them behind turbo GTi motors and going the distance with way more power. The sierra auto even is a trimatic, they can be built to take bulk HP and I've driven them to 11 second passes behind V8's. J series would be awesome IMO.

There's a pretty strong market for good sierra Gearboxes GRPABT1 that tells me you're not 100% correct. In fact, I have a couple of junk sierra gearboxes in my shed that also indicate you're not 100% correct.

Whilst they seem fairly strong from a gear strength point of view, bearings and synchros seem to not last all that long - and the newest sierra geabox is, what, 13 years old now?

If I was swapping a driveline and wanted a manual, I'd use a vitara manual behind whatever suzuki engine I chose. Whilst they aren't much stronger gear-wise, they do have a larger clutch and are considerably newer. Also, forking over money for an adapter plate to allow you to use a smaller clutch and flywheel than the one suzuki designed to use with that engine seems a bit silly.

I only had the sierra 5speed behind a 1.6 carby and flogged out 2 boxs in 9 months so I am with steve on this one. Going into second gear on most of my freinds zooks crunch as well.
