Ok i've been doing a soa on glen1n's fj70 and the problem is that the angle that the driveshaft needs to be on means that the shaft hits the gearbox crossmember. How do we get around this problem?

hi dude we had the same problem in the 40 when i fitted a 5 speed ,we end up cuttin the cross member out where the shaft had to go downn threw it then fitted a peice of heavy wall tube on an angle for clearance and welded it in and added bracing works well .

I put a Double cardan front shaft out of a early 60 diesel in which
gave it enough clearance without cutting the cross member

I believe when the MQ guys have done it (check V8 Patrol's thread), they've preferred to remove the crossmember and modify it to give better clearance, and then fit it further down the chassis rails. Cutting it might make it weak, and since you might be able to get a bit more clearance by modding it, you might consider that. Bit more work though I know.

when I did a SOA on a HZJ 75 (probably worse situation than the FJ) I made a tailshaft spacer and put it on the transfer output flange, and also had to trim a bit off the crossmember. with the spacer the standard shaft was long enough and the angles are high but not extreme. has been wheeled pretty hard and in comps and hasn't busted yet...
better would be to remodel the crossmember and lengthern the front tailshaft but this was $$$$ cheaper.
