They all have piston oil squirters, even the GQ motors so count that out.

TD42T have slightly different pistons i think larger gudeon pins also slightly larger rods.

Try get the TD42T motor, even if it just just for the fuel pump, then your able to get a bit more poke out of the old girl :D

i have had a few apart now unfortunatly haha, silver top have 28mm gudgeons black top have 30mm gudgeon, turbo model for some reason have a bigger crank nut but crank seems to be the same.

only difference is the pistons in the black motors with the vac pump under neith the injector pump, the silver top motor are good can handle turbo and plenty of boost. but the na black top motor crackes pistons i cracked all 6 running 17 psi with a water to air intercooler and running a pyro with correct temps,

gudday

there are heaps of TD42t's in the import Safaris we have over here. The quick and easy way I found is to look for the Hitachi low mount turbo and an Aneroid on the fuel Pump....if it has them and its a good start to begin looking further.

The silvertops in the early GQ's are a bit stronger than the GQ blacktops '94 on (They had lighter pistons and rods so they revved easier, actually went better than the n/a silvertops) The blacktop TD42t in GU's are actually stronger again than the GQ silvertops. They're all tough old motors though even if they are old tech.

Hi Garth, I didn;t think about the pumps on the GQ's with turbo's. Do they have the bigger head as on the Gu's or 10mm still?

cheers dude

Gudday

Na, still got the 10mm internals but they are the engine to get when building up a screamer. Crank boss is bigger too so different flywheel is req.
As for the Heads...I've never noticed any difference, only the inlet manifold was different with the EGR inlet.

what about the blocks?

i remember reading that the early GQ silver top motors have a much heavier block than the later black top GQ motor, that they thinned them right out, bore linings and everything, and this onset the overheating dramas. is this true?
and if it is how do the GU blocks compare?

cheers, andy

gudday from what I can gather there are 3 types of GQ engine.

the silver top pre 94 which are great, the black top post 94 which are good, and the black top TD42T which are best.
As for block differences all i can say is between the silver top and TD42T there are no differences in structure i have noticed when building them up.

I personally have never boosted a post 94 black top, but we have one (with a Garrett 2860RS) with 300k plus on it, and there are plenty others as 'daily drives' around with no drama's.

hope it helps..

ok thanks for that :)

so now i need to know if there is a difference in the post 94 GQ black top blocks.

im waiting for mine to let go, daily drive, d-gas and 15 psi, must be a matter of time :P
if the blocks are different i will look at getting a spare at some point, and if not ill wait til i shit something in this motor then just rebuild that...

cheers, andy

no real differences in the blocks mate i had a 98 black top cracked all 6 pistons running 20 psi and have heard of a few others doing the same, you could just change the pistons if you were worried drop the crank out the bottom of the motor, or take the head and sump off and push them out the top.

if theres no difference with the block ill wait til it starts pouring oil out the exhuast :finger:

do yours do all 6 at the one time?
what happened?

any other damages from cracking the pistons?

cheers, andy

well it got a bit of a mouth full of water only brief though so i comp tested it and they were all down on comp, so i thought i had bent the rods, pulled it apart to find all 6 pistons cracked luckily enough they didnt crack all the way through so the bore was still good.
