Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Coming home from the Flinders a week ago I noticed an occasional clunk from the front left suspension. When I got home, I found the upper control arm bushes were flogged out, and the upper shock absorber bushes didn't look too good either.

Had those replaced, and went away again. Didn't notice anything wrong while I was away, but when I got back to Adelaide I noticed the noise is still there. Seems to happen when weight tranfers onto the left front wheel under brakes, such as coming downhill into a roundabout.

I had my head under the front while changing oil & filter, and found what appears to be a cracked bush on the diff mount - the one in the arm that comes forward from the passenger's side of the diff.

The bush appears slotted anyway, and I can only get a good look at it from one side. The driver's side bush appears OK.

Anybody had these fail? Would this explain the clunk I'm hearing? Can they be replaced without pulling the diff out?

hi i have a clunk noise caming for the front and find i was my idler arm assembly i but a new one on and the noise is not they anymore

I haven't noticed a diff mount on mine and it has had plenty of abuse, I wonder if it could be your sway bar rubbers. I'd take your front sway bar off which is an easy job and take it for a spin.

I had all 3 of my diff mount rubbers stuffed. Pulled the cvs out and removed the hanging mounts (4 bolts either side). They were oval shaped where the rubber pressed in from the diff flogging back and forwards. So they were pretty bad, but still no noticable clunks.

I replaced the mounts from a wreck and the old rubbers had to be pressed out. New nolathanes from repco $77 each I think went in no problems.

Hi fellas! I had posted almost 3 post on this forum for parts with brand Moog. Now im a bit concern of my diff mount. speaking of which, what do you know about the Moog differential mount bushing??

Scott: does it do it in 2H? I be surprised if it was the front diff mounts is it does.
I've got the same problem, don't know what it is. Replace the sway bar bushes to no avail. Upper inner susp arm bushes would be my next guess.

I swore from inside the vehicle the noise came from the front, it wasn't until it did it with someone standing close by outside I could identify where it came from.

A really big spanner on the radius arm nuts sorted it.

Scott, i have just done my front diff mounts. They were flogged to the point where i could grab the diff yolk and move the diff up and down about 10 mm. There didn't appear to be any noises though. Kelpro used to do a pressed rubber mount (I'd used these before) however they have stopped making them. I can see why as i only got about 3 years out of mine. Mitsubishi want about $95 per bush (there are 3). I'm thinking that the noise may be coming from the area of the upper control arm again, as the noise went away when the bushes were done and has now returned. I've also just done the upper control arm bushes on mine. I initially went with the nolathane ones however they lasted about 2 months and were split in two. I've also had issues with the Nolathane Rear trailing arm bushes as well and have just today replaced them for the 3rd time in a year. I actually sent an e-mail off to redranger about their product and they were really awesome. He was saying that they had been playing with the formula for the nylon and they had a rather large bad batch of bushes. He sent me out both the front control arm bushes and the rears, free of charge, as he should.

I would be checking to see if the upper arm bolts and outer nuts are tight. If so i would be checking if there is any play in the replaced bushes. Of course i am assuming they used a Nolathane bush.
