Who says MQ\MK's wont flex

this is a shot of Frankenstine on a rock in my Backyard. Note all 4 still very firmly on the ground. I put these shots on because i read last week from someone that mq wont flex. HUH! :finger: :finger: :finger:

Im sure that the people that know MQSHORTY's rig would also say the same ....................



Nice Flex but i think Mqshorty still takes first prize in my books its by far the flexiest MQ ive ever seen on leafs that is ..............



But as i said ya rig still flex's nice im sure that ya got more flex in ya front than i will ever have with my coil 3 link :cry:

I dig the canvas on the MQ, want to do that for mine in the future. Funny the old rusty motor laying on the ground next to the Patrol. :roll:

Not sure what MQSHORTY'S Patrol looks like, he should post pics! ;)

Maybe this is his truck, dunno but take a look at it. Done by Superior Engineering and man I must say it is a lot of flex.

I think the MQ's hold their own in the flex department, and there are options for improvement. I'm interested DR, what have you done to yours? I'm limited at the moment to any tweaking because the shocks are right near the end of their travel at full droop, so obviously swapping shackles or opening clamps wont get me far until I get enough dosh for new shockies.

I've seen that superior eng MQ before and was somewhat tempted. The rears require a new mount to be welded to the chassis, but apparently the fronts go in quite easily. Around $500 an end from memory though. What concerns me is the extra work on brake and air lines, and of course, shocks.

I can't see any shocks in the piccies - if they can't get them to fit in the show rig, what are my chances?

I would say without a doubt these pics of the red mq where taken during the build up. The ramp was used to see how much it would flex/work and then shocks ordered to suit. (THE SMART WAY TO DO IT!)

This truck does have shocks on it now!!!!!!!!!

Common guys shocks are not the only thing limiting travel in most cars.

This mq had the full service I believe. It is not too hard to get leaves to work but it does require some thought and knowledge and also $$$.

I recall wendle saying that the front shackle mount on MQ's are rather "delicate" and the chassis is a bit difficult to beef up in that area as well ..

I am not a big fan of any "multilink" style shackle, sure they make cars great ramp queens with lots of flex, but they tend to do weird things in the bush. The fronts unload easily during hillclimbs and allow axle wrap and the rears when things get "weird" in ruts etc seem to allow to much "free movement".

A well sorted leaf suspension should not need weird shackles .. I know of a Zuk on MQ diffs with MQ front springs all round that can max out his 14inch stroke ranchos with "normal" shackle's .. so on a patrol with the huge length of the rears lots of nicley controlled flex should be easy .. (once the proper parts have been sufficently beefed up of course)

I'm also not a fan of gimmick shackles for extra ramp flex. You need to get a balance between front and rear flex. no point getting all your flex in the rear as it will climb strangely and tend to fall over as it reaches the end of its rear flex.

DR F seems to have a much better balance between front and rear and I'd imagine would be a lot easier and predictable to drive compared to the red one

Yeah, I reckon mine would be on par with the red one with my spring clips opened up etc. I actually closed the spring clips up to limit flex a bit, doesn't look as good on the ramp but works a LOT better on the track.
It's good to see a few more MQ/K's gettin done up as back when i did mine there was hardly any (that i know of) that were SOA etc.

I know there are no shocks on the red one, I can see that. It still a lot of flex for leaf sprung. Custom shock hoops and the right shocks and I don't think it will limit it a lot. For the axle wrap, some ladder bars can cure that pretty fast and ladder bars can be made to work with the flex not against it. I can also see the red one does not flex as well in front as rear, but that is to be expected right!? Flex is good on the Frankenstien too. I can't get that much flex on my MQ with shocks out, no way! BTW, there are some pics of that truck off the ramp and on the trail....

Personally I never seen drop shackles in person. What you guys say about them makes sense but I may just have to find out for myself. Also a lot of you use your trucks for daily drivers too so road driving is fairly important. For my MQ the only road driving it will do is from my house to the trail.

Any ways, I like the red one, I like Fankenstien and I like SHORTYMQ's even though I can barely see it in his avatar pic. :roll:

i don't think it was me, i don't really know much about them..

the blue truck is cool and very driveable, i'd give that a flogging! the red truck would be pretty scary on anything steep. maybe with limiting straps to stop it falling off it's axles it would be ok. i like the blue one but!

Mine wont pull anthing close to that much flex yet, but hopefully next weekend im resetting the spring packs to a coupla leaves and putting a trackbar in with reverse shackles.
Will see how she goes then :cool:

Best thing I got to flex on in my backyard is the cat.
Already tried once, and I don't think Felix#2 would appreciate it. :twisted:

What springs are best to flex, I got 5 inch coil for touring, King Springs etc any good for major flexing???

with mine all ive done is spoa on carrols springs, Removed 3 leaves front and rear, Rear track bar, run 5012 ranchos on custom shock mounts. all the spring mounts are original and shackles are original also. Front mounts havn't moved yet and im not sure they will seeing the springs are nice and supple. The thing handles nice on road and rocks on rocks off road. I concurr you don't need b\sh#@t shackles. I've heard of many vehicles handling like crap with them ( DAZ 40 series in the early days) sorry darren. and being pigs off road. I think wheel travel is over-rated and all you NEED for a good off roader and even a comp truck is good controlable flex. My 2 cents worth.

mine has no rust (i repeat) NO! rust and if you can find any rust in the body ill stand on my head in Myers naked :finger:
