Just wondering if EXO's are legal and if they require a certificate

from what i've read there is nothing illegal about them, they're technically a glorified roof rack.

i'm doing one on mine as we speak ;)

if you weld to the chassis, yes an exo would be illegal.

If you bolt with u bolts around the chassis, most probably legal, not overly strong

if you drill the chassis, weld in crush tubes and bolt through, most probably illegal.

Either way the cage would not be allowed to protrude too far beyond the vehicle, would need to have radiused edges and not obstruct any lighting ie indicators, head and tail lights.

Why would they be illegal when so many tradesmen use them

Most tradesmen have them attached to the body as opposed to the chassis. In theory a properley attached roll cage (to the chassis) also needs an engineers certificate.
