Hey guys,
my request is easy, i just need some pictures of a Holden 308 black VK engine. the reason is i need to see how the power steering mounts up.
Ive just bought a pump from barsby's in maryborough with the bracket, but it only lines up on the passanger side, and that's were my altenator is meant to go. some pictures or advice would be good, as it's hard to find good pictures on the net.
cheers

i don't have photos on the computer but have a magazine in front of me with a dead stock vl brock.
The pump is mounted on the l/h head. From memory the Alternator should mount below the A/C compressor! Its 1 giant lump of metal. Its only late injected commodores that the alternator is on the left

hmm ok, i have a bracket for the alt, and it mounts on passanger side, and won't fit drivers side as it will be backwards (this wont work) but can you rememeber the bolt patterns from left to right are differant??

Hey stich, thanks heaps for he picks, the power steer pump shoot was spot on,, if it's no too much trouble could i get a pic of the alt bracket, what i have bought had a alt bracket on passenger side. when i got my power steer and bracket it would only fit on passenger side.
is there two different types of brackets for the 308 alternator, ( left to right) as the bolt patterns seem to differant.
cheers guys.

the bolt pattens are the same head to head as there is no left and right heads. they mirror each other. EFI or Carby are still the same.
Torana and carby Commodores alt mounts on the right but both use different brackets.
HQ/WB and efi commodores mount off the left with a bracket that is similiar but slight difference.
Do you have a/c?

No problems bud, i'll take a few more pic's for you now.. I know the feeling of trying to sort out shit for engine conversions too well
especially when you encounter problem's. The joy's of modifying, modify one thing to make it work you end up modifying 10 more,,

Hope this helps. The first pic is a VS power steering pump bracket.
This is a standard black 308 bracket
For some reason when I painted my VK I painted (and smoothed argh) both which did confuse me for a while.
I will find some more images for you from around a few of the other forums.

This is the standard power steer setup for an early 308 Commy.
Power steer on the passenger side. Factory AC bracket to drivers side. Alt mounts under in this case.
Without AC with the typical alternator bracket on the drivers side.
Ignoring the gilmer pulleys the later model setup and brackets are generally like this:
Torana's etc run the low mount alternator bracket on the passenger side like below:
Hope this helps you out a bit.

I'm pretty sure most 308s have the alt mounted on the passenger side. 304s definately do and my alternator is mounted on a factory aluminium cast alternator bracket that can only mount on the passenger side with the alternator about level with the head.
Cheers
EDIT: Just looked at the above post
I will say that mine does however have the factory bracket as stated for the passenger side head, just don't know what Holden it is off.

actualy now i think about it, i have another question,
it's taken me a bit longer to build my truck than expected, now im affraid i may have a little sh*t in the engine, dust, and from grinding and cutting around it, any ideas how to flush the crap out without pulling it down, i fear i may have some in the dizzy hole, and my down some of the ports,
cheers

I'd say there wouldn't be much you could do now but you should have ducttaped all the openings, but you probably know that now...
A little bit of dust will be okay
if metal went down the dizzy hole then it will be in the sump so you can pull that off and clean it, if metal went down the ports then you'll have to pull the heads off.

yea, down the dizzy whole will be the worst, i might just put a bit of kero or something to try and flush, yea the ports are covered, it's just been 2 years for the build, so just don't want to take any chances,
cheers

I dropped some 4WD crud in the valley when I replaced the manifold gasket,
This is the result, every bearing in the bottom end rooted, mains, big ends, cam, cam bearings, crank, bores
Don't take any chances, gaskets are a lot cheaper than motors.
