engine conversions in 4 runners

hey guys was just wondering whats involved in changin my 1990 2 door 4 runner from a 4 banger to a commodore v6 or v8? and which is the better motor out of the 2, am i able to keep my lpg setup?
and any info on the costs involved in getting it done at a shop, i cant be bothered changing over another motor.

Don't waste your time and money on the V6 just my opinion.
The Holden V8 is very easy to slot in especially if you are talking non injected and running on straight gas.
You will however need to either fit a Toyota R150 series trans or adapt a transfer case to a Holden auto.
308 (Kingswood) drivers side exhasut manifold will fit fine and you will need a 308 Torana passenger side manifold. Otherwise custom extractors.
Use the 308 alternator and have a pulley made to help adapt the standard Toyo p/steer pump to the 308.
You will need to make a custom sump and oil pickup.
Plenty of info out there and if you were thinking of slotting in the V6 then it really is not much harder to slot in a 308.

Another common conversion for the 4Runner is the Lexus 1uz V8.

hey mate if your thinkin v8 i just saw a t700 auto with adapter and tranfer already on it on ebay was at $350 when i saw it

Its quite common to go with the 1UZ-FE lexus V8.. Have you considered this as an option? Smaller and lighter than the holden equivelant also..

Actually it is physically a hell of a lot bigger and takes up heaps more engine bay space, makes it's power and torque at much higher revs too, the down side of quad cams

- weight is 185kg (LSL1)
1UZFE Lexus Crown Toyo V8
- weight is 175kg (all alloy)
304/308 Holden 5L
- weight is 225kg
V6 Commodore
-weight 220Kg as well.
With 6 bolt mains and 195kw from factory.. why wouldnt you go the lexus? The potential is there for so much more...
Just quietly, I could never fit a Holden engine to my truck... The Ford fan within forbids it!!

I have a preference for the Holden V8 myself as they are heaps easier to modify and aftermarket parts are catered for.
I have had a few 1UZ V8 cars over the years and they do sound grouse with extractors & 2/12" exhausts on them but the low down power leaves a lot to be desired, I even went with bigger cams, shaved heads and a bigger stall converter and it went like a cut cat in the top end but anything under 3000rpm it was a dog.
Don't think that the 6 bolt mains means it indestructible either as I destroyed 3 motors in my time due to big end failure, 1 broken crank end at the converter end and gudgon pin failure let alone the woeful run I had with Head gaskets on the 1UZ.
I must be weird but I really like seeing all types of motors being used (LS, Ford, Lexus, Nissan V8, Holden etc) but I think I would change your mind on a Holden V8 install if you sat in the passenger side of my car.

Yeah i hear what your saying. The yanks over the sea are fitting the ford taurus sho engines to their 4runners as well from the limited research i found.
Seems the age old argument of which engine is better doesn't change. Different cars different engines, different reasons!
Call me stupborn, call me blind, call me what you will...I'd rather push my ford/lexus/yota/subaru than ride in your holden!

has more easy power potential than most v8's
very torquey at low revs due to all exhaust thru 1 turbo below 3grand (we are talking more torque than a 1FZfe)
problems
cost
and it would be sacrilege to put it on gas
oh did i say it is a big bastard
but if spining tires at 80 kph on the tar is you thing its for u

I have a 4runner with a Holden 202 fitted with a 350 Holley (thinking of putting an sc14 charger on it too) and it pumps, unfortunately I didn't do the conversion so I don't know what is involved but can tell you that if you do want a new engine it's well worth it to consider a non injected Holden engine.

Early Holden 308 with some help
Stout little motor consist's of forged pistons, A9L shot peened rods full ARP studs top , bottom, rods, stud girdle etc.
B Cast iron heads with alot of head work, rollers double valve springs etc.
Motor fits in easy but it's covered with twin LPG converters and to the side is big turbo (78mm compressor wheel)
Bucket loads of HP & enough torque on tap to destroy the driveline at will.
5lbs of boost throws 250kw at the wheels & 17lbs of boost is just crazy (you can fry tires for ever).
