so are they? Mickey Thompson baja claws, bias ply.

PLEASE tell me they are legal for raod use. i read somewhere that they are one of the few bias ply tyres to be road legal.

i'm wanting to get some 31"x11.5"x15", slightly used (4 of).

so do tell me they are road legal.

and who has them? what are they like, apart from sweeeeet!

thanks

I believe they are. Provided they are speed rated and have a dot approval on it which swampers dont.

If you are worried about them being road legal, sounds like you might be doing a few kms on the black stuff with them. If so, go the radials. The bias ply are hell loud and can be a bit of a biatch on the road.

I would agree, get some AT's for lots of road work, and keep the Claws for weekends... they will wear out fuckin fast on the tar

i run 35 radial claws on road, and my mates recon they are quiter than mtr's, handcooks and bfg's. i recon they are quiter than my bfg at's except for at 62- 67klm/ph the claws drone a fair bit than ity goes away. at's whined at an annoying frequency. i will run my 38.5 bias claws as soon as my beadlocks arrive - 2 weeks late so far.

all claws are road legal, if they are on the correct rim / vehicle. 15mm is all the diameter increase you are allowed on qld making even 31's illegal in some applications.

cheers

i live in darwin, and theres not a whole lot of bitumen to drive on, 15 mins from city to suburbs!

and the reason why i worry about them being road legal, is that with a small town with not huge amount of roads, comes the increase in police per square meter! so even though theres not much road to drive on, before hitting the scrub, theres a chance that theres a cop around the next corner!

and if i do get them, i'll have a vitara 3 door with 31" claws that, (i think), might stick out a couple of inches from the guards, and even with flares, its not hard to attract attention from a cop up here. bloody bastards!

thats the reason, (and if that doesnt cut it for you guys, then call me a bitumen posing bandit, or anything similar. now i'm just being an idiot!)

thanks for the info guys.

You bitumen posing bandit!!

In all seriousness, if the local police force want to crack down on you, even if you have legal tyres they'll find something else to grab ya with, (make sure your windscreen washer bottle is full!!) My advice would be get what ever tyres you want(as long as they look reasonably legle) and as long as your not ripping the local Police Sergents front lawn up and keep a low profile around town you should be right...

I agree with bru21 on the noise factor. My 37's a quite as compared to some of the lot less agressive, at tyres.

Whitey is right on the money with the comment about cops booking you for SOMETHING if they want to. I got done for a dirty number plate but when baffled with bullshit (that I knew wasn't right) they let me off on the 37" tyres

If they look reasonably legal then run what you want.

Before I put 3" body lift under mine, the 37's looked like 35's cause, I have a 7" suspension lift and the 37"s didn't look TO big but filled the guards nicely like a 35 would on a vehicle with 3" suspension.

At the end of the day just don't be a smart arse and you'll be suprised what you can get away with. :?

Even coppers drive 4x4's off road on weekends

Cheers

From the pieces of crap I remember running around up there Bias Claws would hardly batter a cops composure.

I would considering the Wet Season rethink running them on the road all the time can get hairy there on the roads as it is as you prolly already know.

What offroading you gunna do around Darwin that warrant claws?

Mud up there just usually eats truck whole anyway :D

I was under the impression you can not change from radial to bias ply legally ???

It has little to do with the speed rating but more to do with the contsruction compared to the OEM tyres ????????????

why not go and ask the local cops what is legal, they are the ones going to shit on you if the time comes?

if they're only 31's i dont think anyone would notice, just the rest of your car could get attention.

From memory, you can't run a mix front/rear, and definitely not accross axles. The tyre placard gives a minimum speed and load rating for the vehicle. As long as the tyre meets that rating, it sholud be legal - apart from the size issues

Mickey Thompson Bias Claw are street legal tyres, it's only the fitment to your vehicle that you have to worry about.

The NT has the 15mm maximum diameter increase law, so I imagine 31" tyres on a Vitara would exceed that by a fair margin...... hence if you're worried about Police the vehicle would still be defectable.
