3/4 Elliptical and speed.

Do you guys think its possible to make an elliptical rear setup that is controllable enough at speed?

I have a set of thrashed out parabolics here that im thinking off cutting up and having a crack at it.

I really only want more down travel in the rear end.

Thinking of possibly making some kind of retainer that when the spring is pushed right up i can lock it back against some high density rubber - for speedy stuff. Maby sounds like a whole lot of pukin around though.

3/4 is the one where ya cut a left in half and put it under ur chassis rail and then connect the normal spring to that allowing it more down travel?

If so we did this to a zook and just put a pin retainer on the top leaf so it couldnt move when on road, and then pulled the pin out of each side when off road.

hope that makes sence!

Im running the Redback 12" air shocks at the moment, ill have to have a look at valving and oil/level

a retainer pin is the only way it will work - unless you can somehow get a shockie to adapt into the shackle eye so the 1/4 spring is damped?

air operated pin lock?
or could you mod the sway bar release mechanism of a gq?

A correctly positioned electromagnet would be quite straight forward and very convenient to use, one wire, no moving parts to rust and seize up, no getting under the car in the slop.
google electromagnetic door holders and have a look around, they come in 12v and 24v with holding forces up to 24KG I would think that (in the correct position) 50KG would be enough.
Remember that the better (flatter) the contact between the magnet and the contact area the more force will be applied, a machined striker plate on the spring would be the go and no paint.

im not sure if 50kg would be enough force? happy to be proven wrong but tom flogs the 75 series, average speed would easily be 140 during comps

Surely it is time to stop flogging the inanimate equine and link the rear end.

Might need to run a ladder bar to give it some control.

I have small rubber pads on my 3/4 setup ,ainly to stop any noise. I don't run mine particularly loose, just a little extra down travel but I don't seem to have a drama at speed offroad. I thrash the zook pretty hard with the GTi motor on song a fair bit. I think so long as you are sensible with the 3/4 setup and aim for useable flex and control rather than ramp queen and get the correct shock valving then it'll be fine.

A nice layer of mud would soon reduce contact to zero, and reduce the force dramatically IMO

x whatever on linking it

Shouldn't be an issue, the weight of the vehicle holds the top spring hard up against the chassis. I ran a 3/4 setup in my Sierra and never experienced any dramas with handling, speed etc. In some cases it improved the handling and comfort as you are effectively lengthening your spring.

Best answer yet. Leaves are great, but for high speed work links are the way to go.

Layto....

I must be lacking sleep. I'm agreeing with someone that owns a Rover and Chrisso

Body roll will separate the spring from the chassis. The lack of roll stiffness would make handling interesting at speed to say the least.

Did you mention speed? a sierra with a carby 1.3 corolla motor, swampers and speed :) you made the funnay

Linking would be just as easy to do & much better in the long run.
I wouldn't feel confident with hitting into rutted washed out corners hard with 3/4 leaf set-up, going straight is fine but sooner or later you will be going hard into a corner & ........ it wouldn't be pretty.
