About to get the rear diff rebuilt in my 97 leaf sprung single cab.the place i'm thnking of taking it said they recommend putting a non collapsable space and shimming the lsd right up.
My question is, is there anything else i should do to my diff while its out or must do mods.
i wish i had money for locker but not an option right now. 4by used mainly on road for commuting and camping/towing.
thanks
Also any recommended places in Melb.or places to stay away from for that matter.

Yeh it's called a solid pinion spacer, you can buy it from locktup4x4, they come with shims.

Don't pay to have the LSD shimmed, toyota lsd's are not a good design and will just wear out quickly. Unless you can do it yourself.

Better off finding someone close to give you a hand and doing it yourself.

Why do you need to recondition the centre, what's it doing or who told you to?

i can hear it whining/growling as i'm slowing down plus if i'm driving at higher speeds 4th/5th maybe even third when i get off the accelerator there is a funny noise kind of like a dry bearing sound. even with a hint of acceleration it goes away. at first i thought it might have been gearbox or a noisy bearing in the clutch but the diff place seems to think it is a crook pinion bearing. while the centre has to come out i was gonna do my rear wheel bearings and axle seals.
do you think they're talking crap? i dont have any experience with diffs and don't know anyone who could help.

Nah they are rob right.

Jump underneath and see if there is movement in the pinion, push the flange up down and in out.. And see if there is oil coming out of the pinion seal (behind flange)

Other really good thing is dropping the oil to see if there is any teeth in oil or lots of metal shavings..

If they reco the centre with new bearings only, won't cost too much but to pay for new gears as well will be expensive.

In which you may be better off getting a 2nd hand centre, (look for one in right ratio with lokker already installed)
