Starting the build up of my Rocky to challenge class spec's. Hopefully it will be a competitive truck built to a budget. As the challenge class has certainly turned into a wallet competition..
Ok, brace yourself.... Total budget, is 15k
Running total is $2600.
Have
-The car, 1985 F75 Lwb rocky, 2.8 diesel.
-GU transfer with adapter to th400.
-GQ front diff hub to hub
-4.6 diff gears for front diff
I'm sure there was something else but i can't think atm.
I've been putting off startig this so I thought I'd post this to get my arse in gear and make a start. Booked the rocky in for a RWC on next week.
Hey Moose!! Hows your nose?? remember? was about 8 years ago...
This is the beast

Nope, will bolt to a TH400 auto. Then I have a choice of turbo pattern chev engines to choose from.
Gonna post a pic of the rocky shortly, stock as a rock.....Lol

Hi,
Im interested in seeing some pictures, I started to build something similar and lost motivation at the moment. I have the spring and shock mounts off the gq welded on the front of the rocky chassis and cut the back off the cab ready to turn it into a ute and it has stopped there at the moment.
So keep up the build, and post up some pics so I can get motivated again.
Cheers,
Ben

Sweet man, so you gonna run Auto?
At first I hated it, but now fully got the bug.
Goodluck with the RWC, I had to get one for mine last thurs, and passed first go! Not bad for a '92 with 375000 on the clock!
Cheerz
Dan.

Just wondering what you are going to do about engineering for the CCDA rules for challenge class or have I just read into the rules too much? This sort of slowed me down a bit as engineering in SA is hard to get done and expensive compared to the eastern states.
Cheers,
Ben

Yeah, not getting it engineered. Rang a few ccda scruiteneers and asked about it. Said as long as its registered its ok. I know the rules state any mods need to be approved with the roads authority ect...
So, Hopefully it gets a rwc and I'll register it before i start modding it.
It will rarely be driven on the road, I'll trailer it to and from events. Might do a day trip here and there.

Failed the RWC
Not much needed tho, worst of it is rear brakes and axle seals,

the 1st piglet I built was a Scat with bunderia 3 link front & surf 5link rearwith 4.88 ratios, V6 commy & auto to H/lux trany,35" tyres, highmount, ect, ect, the truck was fully engineered & registered with all CCDA ticked, as for $$$ value it came in under $15k, addmiditly the original outlay for the scat was $500 & I sold the dsl motor for $1000 but as far as a budget comp rig went, that was my faverite truck. & at that $$$ value she still came home in the top 10 at outback challenge.
good luck with your build, but most of all, enjoy it. (google, pigletracing & watch the old girl going threw her paces)
cheers "PIGLET"

Hey piglet, Thanks, I enjoy building as much as racing them.
Did you have a blue swbgq in the 2000 OBC? Might be a different piglet.
Anyway, Got it registered today!
Also picked up the engine
5.7 litres.......

The blue swb GQ was Glenn Binskins truck & I was his navi for about 8 years we even did the 99 ateco winch challenge in it.
We wrote the cab off in a big roll in MMM QLD extreme winch comp & it has been re-cabed in 2002 as a ute, but Glenn could not get rid of the body & still has it in his shed today. he is going to cut it in 1/2 & mount it on his wall next to his bar, there are some sentamental things you just cant let go of . Im also thinking of doing the same thing with the bent up scat cab that we wrote off in 2006.
cheers piggy

Righto, its now registered !
And picked up the front diff the other day, a gq leaf sprung diff, narrower than a coily, the coil front would have had the brake discs just outside the guards, lol.
Just need a turbo 400 auto now, and a early patfhinder rear diff.

Sorry for going off topic,
Pigleracing,
I initially had the impression you'll be coming over for the RFC in MMM's container.
So what happened?
Love to see more modded Rockys hehe.
Rockmonsta,
best of luck with the competition truck build.
Sounds like an interesting project.
In my dream Rocky build, (maybe in the next life), i'll run Volvo portal axles haha.
I'm sure your setup looks pretty competitive.
Cheers

Holy crap!! I've actually done something, LOL...
Old engine is out, making some mounts for the ls1,
Should fit no worries, the new front axle will be moved forward about 6 inches, more for stability and to improve the wieght distribution an the approach angle then issues with the motor in the way.
Also stuck an ad in the Drivetrain parts for sale, If you r after any rocky bits, have a look.

Got the engine dummied in with a t400 shell.
Did a test fit, all godd, the transfer hits a bit on the tunnel, no big deal.
also put the front cross member in front of the front tailshaft flange...DICKHEAD.... anyway, easy fixed, lol, i'll leave it off until the front diff and shaft are in so i get it right.

I have yes, changed the crossmember to a patrol one. Have the front diff located under, panhard and steering box mounted. In the middle of doing the coilover hoops.
I'll get some pics up once the hoops are done.

front diff under, panhard mount on the chassis on, steering box on.
Coilover hoops on, shocks are there to dummy everything up.
Now useing gq coil diffs front an rear, easier to source and fit, and for parts. Will just need bigger flares now, about 8" worth.
