Swamper 34x10.5r16's on stock yota rims

guys I'm looking at my next set of muddies and I'm set on some Super Swamper LTBs 34x10.5r16's and I want to run these on my stock 16x5.5" toyota rims.

I have done a heap of googling and the guys on ih8mud reckon the 10.5 wide ltbs DO fit on "stock toyota rims"

My question is does anyone have any practical experience with these tyres on stock 16x5.5 toyota rims. I dont want to get these in and find they wont suit the rims I've already got.

Here are some pics I've found on ih8mud and other sites.. Its just really hard to see what width the rims are. visually they look really skinny for a 10.5 wide tyre so they look like it could fit.

apparently this is a 10.5 LTB on the left.

p.s. I'm not interested in running the TSL SS 34/9 swampers as they are NOT a heavy duty tire and have too few plys to be worth the effort.

p.p.s What are the chances of taking these tyres to get put on rims to find out the tyre guys wont touch em?

Mate the tyre on the left is the 34/9 Narrow SS swamper and the one on the right is the LTB in that top pic. The landrover has the narrow SS tyres on as well. I know I've got a set of both. Both the Narrow SS and the LTB run 6 ply tread and 4 ply sidewalls. They are the same.

The Narrow SS fits really well on a 7 inch rim but I reckon a 5.5 or 6 inch rim would probably be spot on. I run my LTBs on an 8 inch rim and I reckon I'd prefer them on somthing skinnier, a 7 would be perfect.

The interco website recommend an 8 inch rim for the 34x10.5-16 LTB. Good luck either tyre are an awesome all round tyre.

Ask Gwagensteve or have a look in Dank's zook build for pics of 34 LTBs. *EDIT* In the time I typed this one has already arrived on the scene :finger:

Looking at those pics I would say the 40 and the 60 have LTBs on them, but the Disco has 34/9s. The side by side pic I would say the LTB is on the right and the tyre on the left is a 34/9 SS

D'oh.. even though I've looked at the interco site heaps I kept thinking the LTB was the more aggressive of the two.

By avoiding the 34/9 Narrow I could maybe swap them onto the 80.. even though they would spend most of their life on the 40.

Dank, I was just lookin through your build thread and didnt notice 2 different sets of tyres. In your opinion, as I'll be looking to daily these on the 40, which has the better street manners?
I realise this could be construed as a funney talking about a bias muddy for daily use :P *edit*: I'll be looking to run these full time on the 40. the 80 is my daily and the 40 gets the odd weekday run as well..

The reason for my confusion:

LTB pattern:

TSL Pattern:

I can see where i went wrong now... :P

Interco Site says the 34X10.50-16LT LTB-08 8ply tread and 4 ply sidewalls

The SS's aren't in my build thread as they are on another of my vehicles. It's a bit of a tough one to seperate the two apart in terms of performance, the LTB has a newer tread pattern with a three stage stepped lug design which is supposed to clear mud better, the older style SS just has three stage straight lugs. Also the LTB has a 9.5" real life tread width even though its a 10.5 wide tyre (11.2 at its widest about halfway between the bead and the tread.) The SS is even narrower.

Theoretically the SS would put down more ground pressure on its tread due to its narrower width which means it would get more traction and I think in some instances I've seen this tyre drive a bit of track that I still drove but did it a bit harder.

I think for the 40 the LTB would be better for an everyday tyre. I run mine at 35psi on the road and its pretty good in the wet, surprisingly good.

The SS gives the impression that its a more agressive tyre but I think its because its tread is almost wider than the overall tyre width whereas the LTB has a wider cross section but similar tread width. Make sense? :D

A few guys I wheel with have run the SS for years and it's a nice tyre and performs well, but I think the LTB has better overall handling characteristics without too much of a loss of offroad performance.

i'm pickin up what youre droppin Dank.. thanks for the info... also had a good read through your build thread... awesome work on the zook.

thinking a bit harder im almost considering using the same rims the JT's are on now, going for the 34x10.5r15's. I'm thinking this way as it'll leave my 31" AT's available incase i get hassled by the plod and from what im reading the wear on these swampers isnt that great.. 2 sets might see a bit more longevity out of them.. i think my current rims are 15x7...will need to check it out. i notice theres no 34x11.5 option..

either way im thinkin that the 34x10.5 LTB's are the go.

Get another set of Simex JT2's... Get 12.5 wide though and get some beadlocks. Gotta run them at 10 psi or below.

They just took overall for the year in Tough Tracks so they can't be too bad. Amazing in the mud and get em warm, ok on the rocks too, as you should know.

If you're trying to go up a size, got to 35's, Creepy Crawlers. Simex measure 34ish anyway.

These 35x11.5x15 JT2's I've got on mine seem pretty good... I haven't had them offroad yet, but I'm quietly confident they'll whoop ass!

Mick, you're running Extreme Trekkers not Jungle Trekkers, very different pattern. that and JT2's came in a max size of 34"

I haven't got any prices yet, I had emailed OPW last week but will call them tomorrow for a quote.

a bit of an update.

as those looking for swamper tyres know there has been some production issues for a while. that said, theres no r15's available, but ive managed to locate some 34x10.5r16 ltb's in stock.

now as ive only got 16x5.5 toyota rims I'm really hoping to get a definative answer on whether you will get these tyres on this sized rim. also if you do get them on these rims what side affects am i likely to see (eg. loosing beads heaps, etc?)

prices im being quoted are 400 corner delivered (they are coming from interstate)

Andrew, apologies if this was mentioned elsewhere, but you're not keen on getting some negative offset cheap sunrasias or something like that, rather than the Yota splitties?

I have 33x10.5 Extreams on 15x8 rims and would not change a thing. The wider rim alows the tread to lay flatter on the rd. Have heard of blokes getting much better performance from the Creepies by going to 10" rims also. I have a set of bfg 33x10.5 on 7's and dont think the old 7's will ever get used on my rig again.

cheers

x2

If you allow $350-$400 for 4 new rim's it will allow you a wide more redaly avaible tyre. Wider choice, better priced rubber, easier too replace.

I've already got 15x7 rims but swamper LTB's are only available and in stock for 34x10.5r16's... r15's are not available until well into next year.

Not sure what you mean benny..

I know what tyres I want : 34x10.5r16 super swamper LTB's
I know what they cost and I know where some are in stock.

I'm just trying to confirm that the rims i've currently got 6Jx16 6 stud chrome rims will fit these tyres, and worse case i'll have to get some 16x7 to fit... but if I'm paying 400/corner i'd prefer to use what i've got.

Why have you mentioned 15's then?

Fourbys can't tell you this?
The shope that has the stock can't tell you this?

Yes they fit.

I had a spare rim and needed to the tyre re-fitted after loosing a bead at glasshouse. I noticed with 16x8's (recommended rim width from interco) they lost a bead pretty easily.

The tyre guy reckons these tyre fit this rim well and are almost made for the 16x6 stock yota rims... Hoping they will hold the bead a lot better. if not i'll fit some 2nd airs.

Hope this info helps anyone else out looking to run a similar tyre/rim combo
