hi guys my 60 has a shity open diff and i cant realy afford to spend heaps on a new diff so i want to get it welded, can anyone surgest a good place to get it done on the gold coast, also any sugestions on what i can do to get a more powerful altinator my last one shit its pants and i baught one from a wrecker and it works but i cant run my spotties without the volts metre on the dash sitting at 12 when normaly with out lights on during the day it sits at like 18, would new batteries fix this also any help would be awsome thanks guys

Why didn't you continue the thread you already had on diffs???

Welded diffs cause breakages, especailly in a big heavy 60, do it properly, get an actual locker that allows open centre movement. They are also illegal in Queensland.

yeh id luv a locker but i just started a new job lol so funds are tight i just want to weld it up then in a few months ill put 80 deries lsd`s in the front and rear and shim them up i just want to kno were i can get it done,, i didnt kno i had a thread on diffs thanks for the reply tho

Don't weld it. Try driving a car on bitumen with a welded diff. It's terrible. And as said before it's illegal.

the minimum cost to put a locker in it would be 400 od dollars. thats without changing carrier bearings, and doing it your self. purchasing a new lokka from 4wd systems. i have on in the rear of my 75 series, but i did replace carrier bearings, it goes well. i havent had any issued yet.

save for a little while longer to put the lokka in. i was in a tight possition at the time, and my diff had completely shit its self, my car us undriveable, so luckily i had my misses car, it took me a long time to get the cash together, it cost me around the 850 - 900 mark, but that is cause i did everything, wheel bearing carrier bearings, axle seals, diff seals, pinion bearings(which i kept instead of putting in as they were still good) lokka, and thats also 20 litres of gear oil and 20 litres of engine oil.

in the end the lokka is worth it many times over than a welded diff, and many many more times than a open diff

If its a daily driver Lokka the rear don't weld it. Welding the front would be ok as its not in drive all the time. If you want it welded just take it out and stop by any workshop and get them to weld it up it only takes a few mins to do. then put it back in your self it will only cost you the oil some sikaflex and may be $50 to the shop.

No, don't do this, you should never weld a front diff. With the hubs engaged you will lose nearly all steering when on gravel or dirt and probably end up having an accident. Ask anyone with air lockers what it's like to drive on dirt with the front locked, damn scary.

On the other hand both my last 2 vehicles had welded rear diffs, both landcruisers and both traybacks so quite light in the rear. The welded rear would probably be more uncomfortable to drive in a heavier wagon, but with the heavier weight and the wind-up of the axles, you will start breaking things and the first to go is axle studs. So go and buy some easy-outs and a few spare sets of studs. Been there done that.

U wont want to weld the front diff, u will have zero steering at all. With my front locker on u cant turn at all.

Welding the rear diff WILL break axles and wear thru tyres very fast, not to mention u will probably loose it everytime it rains a few drops.

Do it once do it right, save ur money and go for an auto or manually operated locker. 110% better.

LOL My dog bumped the front locker switch in my old lux (poor switch positioning) and i hit the forest road and nearly went off the side of a steep drop.
