Pinched this from an eBay Add, LN107 Hilux, 146K on the clock, appears in good cond body wise but;
Motor needs work - has loud knocking/slap noise. Great buy for someone who wants to work on a great looking ute.
and it follows...
Q: hey mate. just wondering any idea what the knocking and slapping is from? has it ever run out of oil? cheers
A: No, we have always serviced it every 5000kms and done the oil changes etc since we've owned it. We've always had Toyota 4WD Diesel vehicles and maintained them very well.
Q: Hi any idea what is actually wrong with the engine and what it might cost to fix, worst case scenario. thanks Sue 15-Oct-10
A: Unfortunately, I haven't had time to go into it. Have asked a few mechanics but they said without looking at the vehicle, they couldn't tell. You could put a second hand or reconditioned motor in it. I'm guessing anywhere from $3000 - $5000 total cost?
Q: i take that it can't be driven?
A: It can be driven but not sure when the motor will stop working all together?
Doesnt realy say much about it, good project, or Pain in the Slot???

I saw that one last night.
Thought the same thing.
It sounds like a good buy if you want to trailer it home, and do an engine swap.

I was thinking that. could be an easy fix, could be a major headache, seems like low kays for engine damage...

I'd say worst case scenario is bottom end damage. bad conrod bearings. I wouldn't buy it unless you were determined to swap the engine out.

one possibility is a broken glow plug tip. They have been known to break off and rattle around. If you could pull the glow plugs out pre purchase you could rule that out.

Has more than likely spun a big end bearing i.e. engine will need to be rebuilt/replaced.
