big difference there in what you are looking at buying so both would have very different answers depending on what you are planning to do with it... daily with a bit of fun... towing of some kind... full on comps which would then depend on what sort- rock crawling, winching, speed events. there are alot of variables in there, and you are looking at two completly different vehicles. a bit more info would help, cheers. perko.

just be aware that tough 4x4's that stand out are not the easiest thing to drive around qld without unwanted and costly attention from the dot.

But as said the two vehicle your looking at are very very different and will be better suited to different things.

with the 40 are you looking at swb or troopy?

if you want to crawl rocks id go an auto, for other things its more of an even argument.

For what it's worth -
Sand- auto
Rock- auto
Steep, technical tracks- auto
moderate terrain - doesn't matter
Fast dirt - Manual
Road - whichever you prefer.

However - you're talking about two cars that are most likely to have old school three speed autos, and in the case of the 40 series, a conversion at that. You are likely to be buying someone else's idea of what a cool 4WD is, and they are often old conversions.

An undergeared, loose 3 speed auto with a tired carby V8 in a 40 series isn't going to be great to drive. Niether is a stock, 30 year old F100.

A 40 series with an EFI V8, a T700R4 and some decent gearing might be very sweet, so it's all really down to what you want to drive and how the car has been set up.

F100's are also likely to be quite tall geared, and will have had many hands fiddling about with them over the years. I'd also steer clear of an F100 for technical terrain unless you are very relaxed about body damage and breaking axle parts - they're pretty bulky and not all that strong for their size.

It's also worth mentioning that not all V8 converted 40 series will have a 5 speed gearbox and I'm pretty sure (original) V8 4X4 F100's don't either. Once again, even with a manual, how good the car is to drive will be all about how it's been converted, or messed with.

Be prepared to spend lots of time and money reworking any car that's had an engine conversion to get it to work the way you want.

Steve.
