dont do it, big hassle and expense as it will need new engineers reports for nsw.
only victoria seems to accept engineering from across the border - apparently its the only state in which the laws of nature and physics are the same regardless where it was certified.
But your actual question:
trailer home or get a permit for 24 hours - needs a pink slip to say its roadworthy (engineering might make that harder not sure) etc
get it home - go to engineer and pay a large amount of money - if they will accept it at all - they might not like how it was done and since they were not invloved in the swap or had any input might not want to even consider it.
then if you get the engineers report.
get a blue slip.
get a green slip.
go to rta pay a bunch of fees then your rego and drive away.

if the rego has been cancelled for less then 3 months will i only need to get it pink slipped to transfer the rego to nsw or does it need to be blue slipped aswell i'm not mmojorly worried about the engineers certificate as it will only be a weekend toy and some comps

Yes definitely needs a blue slip, any vehicle interstate does.
If you not worried about engineering... I dont see how your going to get a blue slip. a V8 hilux is not easily missed.

You need a blue slip no matter what, i bought a car from qld last year and it had rego and i still needed to get a blue slip for it befor being able to regested in nsw.
You should find and talk to a engineer befor you buy it, get him to look at what has been done by supplying him copies of the plate details and see if he will pass it if there is nothing major wrong with it when he looks over it.
