Interchangable Transfer cases

Needing info on Hzj80 Cruiser tranfer case (HF1A) Have been told that 100 series t/cases are same and can be used in 80 series. Is this right??
Not without moifications. The length is different, requiring a rear tailshaft modification. I believe there is also a difference in the input and/or output shaft splines.
Definitely not a straight swap.
