Outer Limits 4x4 Board

gday, was wondering advantages and disadvantages and what size you guys would recommend to run a 79 series cruiser? Diff ratio's can be altered as it is in the planning/costing stages atm

The advantage of a larger tire is that it goes over bigger obstacles easier. The advantage of a 37 over a 35 depends entirely on the terrain you want to drive. The disadvantage of a larger tire depends on what vehicle it is on. Gearing, braking and handling are the main things affected by big tires, so you need to factor those into your build.

35's wont attract the attention the 37's will...

Can't compare them, except the 37's will give you more clearence, but will require more power to turn/stop etc..

if its mainly going off road go the 37's. that many holes have been chewed out by 35's now you need bigger tyres. there is a GU in last months 4x4 action magazine with 37's and only has 65mm of lift and running hydrulic bump stops.

Depends on how legal you want to be too, you'll get 35's legal in most states... 37's = good luck

I've run both sizes in heaps of different types of tyres, everything from boggers, tsl's, krawlers, mtr's etc etc and to be totally honest, there's not many places i cant go on my trusty old (and completely legal) 35" BFG's so thats all i run these days.

I really dont see that much of an advantage to 37's unless purely and solely off road

ok well guess totally scratch the 37's as it seems like hard work to have them on there.
Ive narrowed down to a choice of 3 tyres:
Cooper STT Armor-TEK 3 in 35's
Micky Thompson MTZ in 35's
Super Swampers IROK 36's

any recommendations on these 3?

Um, kind of a hard call mate without knowing alot more about the type of driving you like doing...

Personally, out of those 3 i'd scrap the MTZ straight away, good tyre but i've never yet been impressed by their traction abilities in the harder stuff, not compared to others on the market. But thats just me, in my opinion i believe the STT to be much better for both touring, daily driving and off road use. The Iroks though are in a different sort of league and pretty hard to compare directly, kinda like comparing apples and oranges...

Any more info on how or what you drive?

The driving i will be doing once its all going will be either up in the NT or Nth QLD depending where i get posted, it will be pretty much whateve i can find. river crossing, sand, hard dry stuff, rocky hills etc etc. also do a bit of touring and go up to the cape and stuff like that

In that case then i'd rule the Iroks out for sure, definately too full on for that sort of stuff...

Personally out of those 3, i'd go for the STT, but the MTZ's would handle it too - for that sort of driving, still worth considering

ok cool, well ill probably go with the cheaper of the 2 cause they both seem like chunky tyres. How well do the coopers handle mud?

As well as a typical muddie can, STT's, MTZ's, BFG's etc etc they're all alright...

Might be worth ordering the 4wd action back issue with the frikkin huge muddie comparo from a while back, had a lot of comparos in the past, but this one was huge, cant remember what issue it was but they'd be able to help you out... Cant remember much of it now, but i remember thinking it was pretty dam good

Stay with 35's unless it is a weekend play truck.. Less hassles...
