If you have an old school disco or rangie you can lean out the mixture by adjusting the airflow meter
the harness going to the airflow meter has 4 wires. get a multimeter and measure the voltage of the 2 outside wires.
mine started at appx .8 volts and whenever i was reving hard it was pumping out black smoke.

get a flat blade screwdriver and to the right of the wiring plug is a hole with an adjustment screw.
wind this screw in or out , i can't remember but the higher the voltage the leaner the mixture.

i have set mine to 1.1 volts and now i have no more black smoke on hard acceleration and my fuel usage has dropped to 14.8lph around brisbane

have not tried highway yet but i'm sure i will get at least 13lph

hope this helps guys have fun saving fuel

Theres a few good threads on AULRO about this. I'm waiting till I can get an oxygen sensor and gauge before I fiddle too much with mine. But as far as I knew going lower in voltage gave a leaner mixture. Mines set at 1.3 atm which is supposed to be within spec.

edit* good pdf in this post on it but there are many more good posts on it.

Yes - Stuee is right.
You need an oxygen sensor and read in the engine specs how much the co2 output have to be.
You can even set it down to 10l on 100km and the engine maybe goes even better. But your engine wont last long (running to lean).

Lower the voltage , leaner the mixture.
Maybe you had bad contacts on the plug and the ECU was in Limp Home and disturbing it cleaned it .
To keep it good, just twist the contacts in the plug a LITTLE bit to get better contact.
