gu tb45 to gq td42 wiring issues.

hi,

i'm going to put a td42 into my gu that has a tb45 in it. the only real issues i think that i am going to have is the wiring. i already have everything else i need to put the motor in.

can you wire the td42 up to the tacho?

are the wiring looms reasonbly the same and all you have to do is connect it all up.

will the gu wiring loom have a timer set up for the glow plugs?

i think that those are the main wiring issues.

i was talking to a guy who did the same conversion to a 3l gu patrol and he said all the gq td42 wiring plugged into the gu 3l loom and the only things he had to do was get the tacho changed to suit the 6 cylinder motor and remove the engine light from the dash.

any info would be great.

thanks, lozz

Hi lozz, I did a td42 to replace tb42 and the wiring was the easy part.

There wont be a glow timer from your tb45, I didnt bother as it requires the timer module and then wiring to your radiator, glow plugs, ingnition etc.
I and many others on here have simply wired a momentary switch straight to the glow plugs (big fuse and heavy wire though as they pass alot of current and you will burn out standard size wire)
The other wiring is the fuel cut solenoid on the injector pump which MUST be wired to your key to stop it.
I couldnt get the petrol tacho working as apparently it needs a certain wavelength of current from the efi motor.
I still havent bothered getting it working and really dont miss it that much, they are a noisy engine and you will here whats going on.
My conversion just passed the engineers mod plating today so am very pleased.
there are other things like bigger fuel lines and filler neck but you probably already know that.
Good luck Kent.

hi thanks for the info.

do you know where the gq glow timer is located as i can still get it out the car?

with the tacho would i be better off buying a 2.8 or a 4.2 gu tacho if it all wires up then it should work?

thanks, lozz

I have a feeling the timer is under the kick panel besides the drivers side right.
its a green plastic box the size of a large cigarette packet.
If you get a tacho cluster from a td42 then yes it will work but will it fit the gu dash?

If you want to use a glow control rather than using a factory set up which can bugger up buy one of these, im doing the same conversion as you and im using one of these too

I thought it was, i had no idea what i was going to do cause like i said, couldnt be bothered finding all the factory parts and wanted some thing a bit more wife friendly and stumbled across that,

Mine showed up the other day, looks like a pretty good unit

But heres a tip, see if you can order it through there website as it states free worldwide shipping yet on ebay they charge you shipping, found that out after i bought mine :x

killalux wired mine up and he got the tacho working but it only kicks in after 1200rpm which is no problem at all.

cris when you removed the 4.5 how hard was it to remove the wiring for the motor from the car?

how long did it take?

thanks, lozz
