Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi there,
I am new here, this is my first post. I am looking for the procedure to preload the rear wheel bearings on my 80 series. The drivers side developed an oil leak, and upon inspection i found that all the axle studs had broken. i have bearings and seals, and the new studs are on the way, but i dont have a manual yet, so i am not sure of how to re set the bearings. this is the family car, so i need to get it going as soon as posible. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

It's hard to describe, I'm sure Toyota has a hub turning torque and a special tool to do it. All I ever used was a phillips head. Just spin the adjuster on and get it firm and back it off a little, this ensures that everything is seated properly. Give the hub a spin and try to wobble it, nip up the adjuster again. The hub should have a very small amount of drag. Align the holes in the adjuster up with the lock ring (closest ones you can) and put the locking screws in.

The procedure is the same as the front.

Torque the adjusting nut to 43 foot pounds.
Turn the hub a couple of times left and right.
Loosen the adjusting nut to finger tight
Torque the nut back up to 43 foot pound.

You can measure the pre load if you want with a fish scale, but it's a fairly pointless exercise

You can make a tool with a bit of flat bar and some old bolts and a socket, or some places actually sell pre made ones.

Personally I don't advocate the 'tighten by feel' method of wobbling the hub/tire. It never gets the bearing tight enough. For a type of car that could see rough roads and what not, it's worth doing it right.
