GQ rear brake issues

Hi All
I have a bit of an issue with my rear brake sqealing most of the time and also getting quite hot at times (GQ, single piston caliper – disk brake).
I searched and had a look in the bible, but I couldn't find any relevant post.

Given that the rear axle seal or bearing as the seal has just been replaced, I think it’s either the calipper is not sliding properly or the piston is not retracting enough.
I greased the calipper slide when I reseated the pads last time and the workshop has done it again and the problem is still there.
Is there anything, I might have missed?
What should I do next?
- Put a refurb kit through the caliper
- Get another s/h caliper
Cheers
Joachim

A split in the rubber seal/boot around the piston will have caused it to sieze. Fairly common.

I'd strip the piston down, clean it all up (make sure theres no score marks or dags), then re-assemble with all new seals.

Hi J,

I am from SA and had a similar problem on the left rear. Wheel kept getting very hot. I changed wheel bearings , pad and discs, only to find out that the caliper mounting bolt had a slight bend in it. Piston would move pad in, but was unable to release competely thus cuasing more than normal pressure.

I changed the bolts and have not had an issue.

Hi Grant

Are you talking about the pin/bolt which is part of the sliding mechanism (the one with the rubber boot)?

Cheers

Hi J,

Correct. How I fold out it was this, was that I used some carb cleaner on all the stripped items. On seeign a shinny polished section on the bolt, I realised this was the &*&^%^$%$ that cost me a fortune.(Replaced pads , disc's and wheel bearings.
