in your opinion what length wheel base is best for off road and still whats involved

Depends what you are doing :?: Winch events 104 is cool, good for climbing and speed but still good for tight turns on 36" tyres. If you go 37" tyres + 110" is good. This is just my thoughts as I have been caught out on this B4, I may be wrong. ;) :D
If you are keeping the body eg: wagon, ute 104" is about as far as you can go without too much work. If you go tray you can go too 118" .

Ive moved my rear back just ova 30mm anymore and i will have to start fukin round with inner gaurds on the rear so that i clear my 37"s ..............i prob should have just dunn it but i couldnt be afrked with the extra work it woulda involved.....

Wendle had his back bout 60mm but he had the inner gaurd work to his inners cleared his 37"s with 6" spring no body lift .....Carltons mav sat at bout 99" b4 his BUGGY BUILD UP :D

I will stretch out the front wen i start the 5 link eventually....................but for the time being hopefully it will climb a bit betta with the four link longa arm setup that i now have ( HOPING)

But if ya goin tray back id make it a 100 - 105 or so long

Sorry, didnt finish what I started. As per Trent Leen's rig, ute conversion, I move the inner wheel arch, outer wheel arch and outer panel to suit stretch. I also do an A frame and longer lower arms, all H/D and adjustable, so can adjust ( Squat/anti squat) to suit car/driving style. :D

like cheezy has said, it depends on what your ute chop entails. tray or body?
you also have to consider if you want your fuel tank to stay where it is. even without all the panhard shit on the backlof the axle, you only get about 100mm (from memory) before the tank is in the way of the coil mounts and stuff.
moving the front axle forward is a very good thing as well, i shifted mine till the tyres were starting to get into the rad. support panel, and it makes a huge difference. if you look at where the axle sits stock, half the weight of the engine is infront of it. dumb.

just keep cutting and stretching till you end up with something like this ROFL..
the red truck sits about 98" or close now i think, 37"s no body lift.
the blue thing (most of a GQ chassis) is about 105", with 39.5"s on standard nissan springs.
standard wheelbase is 2400mm or 94.5" but most of the lifted ones end up about 93"

do you build mounting height adjustability into the link mounts?

And another question for Cheezy if you don't mind - when giving a SWB the MWB treatment - what of the fuel tank issue that wendle brought up? is a new shorter tank required, or is the standard size tank OK and left alone?

tank would have to change, surely?
104" is a 241mm stretch. that is a lot of millimetres to put somewhere?

We do one of two things.
Lift tank up for trays or set them through the floor or get LRA up the road to make a custom tank and mid mount them. I will try and get some pics up if I can.

Would love to see photos of the mid mounted tanks if you ever get time Cheezy, thanks.

What does anyone think the weight difference would be between a ute/softop or a trayback. Which one would be lighter? Obviously depends on the tray design and materials, but any general indication?

Carlton are u aware of wat Cal has down to his MAv to gain that wheelbase eg moved front forawrd so far and the rear back ............
Its Just that mine was bout 2382 (93.7")with the say 5"lift takin its toll inwheelbase with the rear back and front forward slightly its now at 2424mm (95.4)..............just curiuos cause it wouldmean that Cal has moved the rear back bout 95 or so mm if he has only gone with the standard 12mm spacers on the front radius arms ............

Just wonderin wat he has done with the panhard chassis bracket ,and upper coil perches as the coils would be ona wicked angle if thy havent been moved .......... letalone fuel tank ;)

I should of went back back prob another 1" or so in hindsight as i will prob only go forward another 1" givin me a final wheelbase of 96.5 ............im also contemplatin movin the front b4 the 5 link goes in by cuttin out the radius arm pin mount and replatin and 1" forward ....

I am although worried of the angle my fron shocks are guna be on as they already sit leanin forward on the bottom with the 12mm spacers fitted up front ???

he has moved the rar back a fair bit, not sure how much, but everything rubs on everything

the front has some spacer doodads, and him and maurice did some weird shit using castor bushes and cut and shutting the radius arm mounts on the axle to get it forward..

How do you guys get on with using MWB GQ's in Winch Competitions?? In NZ, we're not allowed to alter the wheel base of the vehicle from OEM......I thought our rules were based on yours??

Cheers

The outback challenge does not allow wheelbase change, but the events MMM runs (winch challenge) do allow wheelbase change. I suppose Trent Leen does not plan on going in the Outback challenge. Not sure about the Ateco challenge or Short course series? Maybe if enough people change their wheelbase the rules might change for the most modified class??
