heavy duty axles into 10 bolt rear diff

Hi you guys out there i recently broke a rear axle in my 1993 J top off roader, using 35 "super swampers , it has the mitsi 10 bolt diff with locker . i had a 12 bolt rear diff so i investigated the possability of using these axles, they are 32 spline ( as against 27 spline) i had to remove diff head to repair carrier etc ,i drove it for 3 hazards in 3 wheel drive . not good ,as it smashed one side carrier berring to bits. and done some other damage also bent other axle .the 12bolt diff was higher geared 4.6 but also had a mitsi locker the axles were the wrong length . but i found an other 12 bolt diff this one was lsd only, bingo the axles are the same length as the locker on 10 bolt diff shortaxle 604 mm ,long axle 640mm to the circlip. so looking at side gears there is no way that you can use the larger ones so got an enginering shop to recut the splines on the side gears with some new machine thats cuts hardened steel . then had to turn out the in side of carrier to take the thicker axles . all done and ready to go , no more broken axles i hope .I like the look of the 10 bolt locker as it also has a lsd arangment to slow the wheel spin befor the locker engages the 12 bolt diff doesnt have this and have heard of the odd one braking the dogs off hope this might be of interest to some of you guys out there.

Good work Don.

Great idea on getting the big axles and if I break my 10 bolt one I'll be talking to you and doing the same.

Frank off this forum would be pretty interested to hear you have done this.
