stripped timing gear

stripped timing gear
my friend has just recently purchased a non-running range rover. the bloke told us that "it just stopped running and that it was only a $30 part in the distributor".i pulled the timing cover off the 4dr rangie with a 3.5 and the top gear of the timing gear has stripped all its teeth. suprise suprise . what i need to know is what damage it could of done from the most mild to the most amount of damage as i dont want to put it together and find out something else is wrong
there is no such thing as a stupid idea... just a person who owns a rover!!!
Re: stripped timing gear
bent valves, holes in pistons.

Re: stripped timing gear
I would have thought no damage. Just rebuild the distributor, tune it and go driving again.
If its the camshaft it'd probably be as the post above and easier to get another motor.
