5 spd gearbox onto a p76 engine

5 spd gearbox onto a p76 engine
HI just thinking of buying a 5 spd gearbox from a series 1 discovery for my range rover but im unsure whether it will fit up its a 4.4 p76 engine with the stock 4 spd behind but wanted to go 5 spd box, any help/advice is good at the moment
1981 range rover- 4"coil + 2"body rollcage, disco interior and goes better than a pootrol
Re: 5 spd gearbox onto a p76 engine
yes they do bolt up..
an old hot rodder that lived across the road from me told me that the 4.4 isnt balanced on the crank but instead balanced on the fly wheel.. i do stand to be corrected but hope that helps.

there is no such thing as a stupid idea... just a person who owns a rover!!!

Yep sure does just remember to have correct spigot bush
Re: 5 spd gearbox onto a p76 engine
so ill need to get the 5 spd flywheel macjined and balanced? and are the clutches the same ive just put a new clutch in mine and then thought of going to a 5 spd

As long as you use a gearbox from a V8 disco. The diesels use a different bell housing that is not compatible.
There were 2 different 5 speeds used in disco I. Early years had the weak LT77 (also used in rangies), the update version of disco I (from 95 IIRC) had the R380, which has stronger gears and larger bearings than LT77. The early R380 has a design flaw that causes a shaft to break, this flaw was fixed around 98 and at the same time, gears and bearings were made stronger again.
You will also require an LT230 transfer case as the 4 speed LT95 has an integral transfer case. Make sure the t/case input gear has the cross drilled lube holes - this was a mod to overcome the problem of worn splines on gearbox main shaft and input gear.

Re: 5 spd gearbox onto a p76 engine
Unfortunately the clutches are different. The 4 speed has a course spline, whereas the 5 speed has a fine spline. I recently did the conversion as well and had the same problem.Ye Olde Rangie wrote:so ill need to get the 5 spd flywheel macjined and balanced? and are the clutches the same ive just put a new clutch in mine and then thought of going to a 5 spd
Re: 5 spd gearbox onto a p76 engine
you will have to get the fly wheel ballanced with the crank

Re: 5 spd gearbox onto a p76 engine
I did'nt I just got the Rover flywheel redrilled to suit the p76 and had no vibrations/problems at allrustysrangierecks wrote:you will have to get the fly wheel ballanced with the crank
