Surge tank on a comp rig

I know what they are and I know what they do but should I use one?

2 Mates have or have had Efi Sierras and thye both drive them fairly hard. Both of them do not have surge tanks. One of them has a Vitara tank the other runs a bocsh 044 inline. But I am going to be pushing mine a little harder and it will be on much bigger angles then they ran with higher revs and all the other joys of doing comps.

I am just wondering what some of the other G16 buggys and comp rigs are running? I know some of you are running LPG.

I have a few rev heads and high performance guys telling me I have to run it and others saying not to. If I was going ot run one it will be about 30cm long and 4cm round nice thin and long to help keep the fuel suply even on big angles. I will be running a 40L fuel cell and a Bosch pump with a regulator. If I run the surge tank it will also have a 4-6 low pressure lifter pump to feed the tank.

I am asking because we are about to start designing the rear of my rig and need to start planning placement of it all.

Just let me know what you have done and what did and didn't work.

If your running a fuel cell, Is it designed for efi?

If so, dont need a surge tank.

Sierra's: my swb is a swb efi vit tank, stock intank pump, My lwb will be a lwb 2.0L efi vit tank, stock intank pump.

I can only see the need for a surge tank if your fuel pickup in the current tank will be sucking in air at any stage. As for size and shape etc Tall and thin makes sense to me, will always have fuel up to the supply line.

If it's a trailer pig which it seem's it's going to be. I'd be thinking looooong and hard about LPG, will remove lots of electrics which is never a bad thing. will clean up the engine bay alot, again never a bad thing. Forklift bottles are easy to plumb in, easy to come by and easy to refill. You will never have fuel supply issues, just oiling issues.... The only real downside is range, which on a trailer is a pretty small problem considering the plus's.

It is a standard fuel cell with exteranel fuel pump. It does have a sump but its not very deep.

I am planning on taking this for week long camping trips and there may be a small supercharger or turbo in its future. That is the only reason I am not going LPG. I want to be able to fill it up in the bush not have to take extra tanks.

I have thought about Duel fuel with only a small fuel tank and run it 90% of the time on LPG but then its a lot of extra c^@p to fit on the rig.

And I like the look of the nice polished look of the fuel cell.

Also with LPG the 2 guys I have asked about putting a G16b on gas have both told me there is not a bolt on made to order set up but it can be done. I know a while ago Evl-11 put up a good picture of his set up but i can't find it. Any of you that have this set up can you post up some pics. Of mixer/fogger/ lines.

Didnt look too hard :finger:

Can't see the 1.6 being thirstier than my old 4.2 patrol which drank roughly 90Ltrs of gas in 12-14 or so hours of wheeling.

Running the twin scuba style tanks underneath. and a forklift as a reserve. more than enough range.

What kind of set up do you run? Intank pump (vitara or other efi tank) or do you use a inline pump? If inline do you use a reg?

ive ran both external (VL commodore pump) and internal (was out of a patrol subtank) no reg in either setup

LPG can be the F in EFI ...Take a look at the amount of "stuff" you dont need on LPG, vs the trade off of some absloute power .. if anything LPG should suit a vehicle like a Zuk better as it should lift the torque curve in the lower rev range a little.
