Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Since i started playing with mud for a long time, my rear drum brakes where always warned out (after some mud trips). Therefore i searched the junk yards, to find some disk brakes. Here in Greece a feroza owner has used disk brakes from GOLF GTI (i dont know which year) i personally wouldnt recomend them they are to small to handle the weight of our little feroza. So i bought from KIA SHUMA 1.5 calipers and front disks from Samurai.

Some parts had to be changed since not all brake lines are the same.




Base on that piece of paper i made the brake brackets from 6.5 cm of steel

Now only the handbrake its left to be done this week. I did all this because its much easier to change brack pads by your self and working better in mud. After some trips the brakes are working perfectly, brake pads and disks are in good shape after lot of kilometeres.

Disk are a great idea IMO... the stock drums just aren't up to the off road life IMO.
In fact i ran no rear brakes for about a year - and frankly it made virtually no difference - that's how useless the stock ones are after awhile.
The major issue without useable rear brakes was backing down big hills.... when the front unloaded it got a bit scarry so i had to get on with it.

I'm now running Nissan 180SX Calipers with Feroza front solid disks at the rear - which work very well.

They also use the disk brake as the handbrake mechanism and the cables come out along and behind the axle making them very practical and protected. The 180SX cables also only require a small mod to the cable mount at the body end and are long enough to allow for lots of travel. There are other similar Nissan calipers ( Pintara etc ) which use an almost identical caliper and integral handbrake, but the handbrake cables come out parallel to the chassis which IMO is a little less suitable.

Ratio is cool as they are designed as a rear brake in the first place.

however as ive got a Toyota rear axle i've got a slightly different mounting system..... very straightforward and the disks go on the rear of the axle flanges using holes i put in the flanges when i was making them.
